Some CGI is overboard, just like HDR, when done right in moderation, OR with proper budget, it can be amazing.

It seems the directors that are photography oriented used less "special effects", or none at all. David Lean and Stanley Kubrick come to mind. Lazy film makers use it all they can....SyFy originals, for example.

Some of the best movies of all time are heavily dependent on CGI, and they are far from lazy producers.  Avatar or Titanic good examples of extremely complicated movies that were incredible.

Popular and good are two different things. Avator may well have been a cartoon and Titanic was an expensive chick flick. (Notice I don't care too much for hollyweird)
