Actually it is the casinos themselves that dont allow it but, saying it is the law sounds good. Since it is their property it is their right to refuse to allow it, atleast indoors. You can photograph the exterior from the public sidewalks. Also stores, malls and any other privately owned properties can restrict you from shooting, with the exemption of from public areas. People love to argue that since the public is allowed access they can shoot but, in reality these places are private that allow the public into them as opposed to public lands or common areas.

As i've done a shoot in a casino, i can tell you why.

Multiple reasons.

A lot of money, credit cards are flashed around. They dont want people taking pics of your credit card numbers, same with the post office. Identity theft is rampant.

Also, most casinos have their own photographers, and want to control their media and advertisment content since the market is cut throat competitive.
