What camera are you getting?

If you want to get into flash photography it's going to be needed. You can find some good deals on KEH.com, Ebay.com and might even find one on Craigslist.org also.

Perhaps so, however I would look at those same places I mentioned above for lenses also. Matter of fact I have bought a couple pre owned lenses from KEH.com, they were in excellent condition and the best part of course is the savings on the wallet!

KEH.com really is the best and they are very reasonable. On our budget it really helps.

KEH.com is a very solid used camera dealer. One thing to think about is buying a used body with more features and versitility than some of the newer "lower end" cameras. One of the reasons that I bought a Nikon D70 two years ago was on the advice of my friend at the local camera store, this advice cost him the commision on the sale of a brand new Nikon D60 outfit.

Why did I choose a 5 year old camera body to start photography? Simple, lens availability. The D70 and D80 as well as the D90 can use and autofocus with the entire AF lens line, which avails the user to 25 years of Nikon AF lenses.....Quite a selection. Here's a link to KEH.com for a clean D80 body below........

They also sell flashes for whichever camera that you choose, and IMHO, everyone at some point needs a flash for their outfit. Even if you only use it once in a great while.

It is what it is.

Can the D3100 do the CLS off camera stuff with just the pop up flash controlling it?

Copied fron the Nikon website on the D3100 page;

Nikon Creative Lighting
System (CLS) Advanced Wireless Lighting supported with SB-900, SB-800, or SU-800 as commander; Flash Color Information Communication supported with built-in flash and all CLS-compatible flash units

I believe so.

It is what it is.

Sb-600 would be more the efficient if you went nikon. The 430 ex will do the trick for canon. You'll want a flash. The on camera flash sucks.
