When photographing sunrise/sunsets.....

For the "Tips and Taking Photos" forum.
When photographing sunsets/sunrises..... dont forget to turn around and check whats going on behind you. Some of the nicest light can be right behind you and you'll never even know it.

Karl is right - I always look for "bounce" as it is called. this does however bring up the fact that you should always be aware of your surroundings for safety too. Don't forget that you can become a target for thieves since you have things worth stealing around you too.

Basically what i'm saying is it's easy to have tunnel vision on the intense light in the sky and clouds during sunset/synrise. Theres alot of nice "bounce" as Rob described and also there are alot of nice soft pastel colors that are worth capturing. Alot of times my self and other photographers are so locked on the intense color display going on in front of them that they miss a really nice softly lit landscape going on behind them.... Lol, this is when it's nice to have 2 cameras and 2 tripods. 1 for the sunrise/set, the other for whats gong on behind you

Again, please excuse the low res scans.. they are of 4x6" prints.

This one is not directly behind me (because i wanted the right angle on this bridge) but it's 180 degrees from a real nice sunrise that i could have been taking.

This isn't the best pic but it's an example of some of the nice soft pastel colors that can be produced when turning around..

Another pic where the sunrise is coming over lake Erie on a beach... I turned around for some nice light and texture on these cottonwoods..
