How was this photo taken? (high speed photography)

I was looking up some photos on high speed photography and was wondering how are these people triggering the camera to go off at the right moment? Can I do this type of photography with my D70?

I believe shots like this use special sensors to trigger the camera. I've not done any high speed photography, but do admire the work.

You could use manual focus to set the focus plane on where the orange is going to be. Have your shutter speed up high, and burst it with 1 strobe.

What would be a good lens to use on a photo like this?

Macro, telephoto.

I wouldn't suppose a 50mm would be considered macro would it? I need to get a 105mm!

After seeing this thread, I got motivated to try this. So I went to pet store and found a 10 gallon fish tank on sale for $10! Had the oranges, used a 105mm lens. I was having issues getting enough light to keep my aperture around 8 with a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the water spray when the orange hit. At one point I bumped my ISO up to 6400 ha ha ha.

Any way here's my first attempt. I'm going to tool around with this again today hopefully. Both images were played around with in Photoshop to clean up some spray and darken the black.
