Moon

How to take pictures of the moon? I have tried so many things and just can't seem to obtain any detail. What am I doing wrong?

ISO 400, f/4 to f/8 (depending on shutter speed and moon brightness), manual focus at infinity, aim at the moon.

If you have a long lens, that will help. You might also want to add a tripod with a lower ISO, but don't use too slow of a shutter speed. It's moving.

I personally had better luck with lower ISO and a tripod. But I agree, don't use too slow of a shutter speed. Just a couple stops too slow for handheld :)

How would you photograph the moon in motion on one frame, what settings? Would it harm the sensor? Is it even possible? Thanks

I've never harmed a sensor. Not sure it's possible. Though the lens is like a magnifying glass, and it theoretically could burn some ants.

The Moon and the Earth are both moving, so a locked in tripod will blur with too slow of a shutter speed. As Roy (rmeyer7) said, if you are close to a handheld shutter speed with your tripod, you won't notice blur 'cause they are moving so slow.

The Moon is actually pretty bright, and with clear skies it can be photographed hand held. Try ISO 400, f/4 and see what shutter speed you get.

Matthew :)

My moon solution is to spot expose the shot right on the moon. Here is one from this morning - handheld while waiting for the sunrise to develop.

I have others taken before the spot exposure was deployed but it is just a white dot in a sea of dark blue sky...

Good point about spot exposure, Charles.

Just playing around Saturday night, I got this with a 70/300 IS at 300mm, ISO 1600, 1/200, f/25, handheld leaning against a railing for support.

A tripod would have been better.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
