Great advice ! I do have a question that I seen to NOT be getting the hang of... I have the canon 30D and LOVE it ! I want to get ready with our church for the Christmas events...Inside the church I have gotten that down now, but wanting to capture Christmas lights at night without getting the 'lighted up' area, seems to get me...I either have no flash and too dark or the flash makes it look like daylight. ANY help will be appreciated !!!
Thanks,
Leslie

Flash is about balancing the flash light with the ambient, both as a key and as a fill (indoors and out). Either way, you are making two separate exposures at once.

Indoors, use an ISO of 400, choose an aperture between f/4 and f/8, and control the ambient light (the brightness of the Christmas lights) using your shutter speed.

Outdoors, set the camera to the lowest ISO, the shutter speed to "sync" and adjust the aperture to control the ambient (flash in TTL mode). You can also adjust the flash EV (or FEC) to control the amount of fill.

:)

Or you can visit strobist.blogspot.com/ and/or read Bryan's new flash book, and they'll teach you how to turn your expensive TTL flash into an inexpensive all manual flash.
