I recommend bounce flashing and using Single Shot focus mode so the flash will help you focus. Also as high an ISO as you can stand to use.
Also shoot manual and TRY to get the settings at about 1 stop below ambient. This will let some ambient light be in the shot and will prevent only the flashed subject being the thing "not in the dark".
Advice is for people who might stumble across this thread in the future BTW> I know the "deed" has been "done" already.
