Group photos, Sports teams, Candid & Portraiture Photos

Hey everyone, so I recently have taken a huge project, being the editor for my high school year book. I am trying to get a feel for better group photos, sports team photos, candid and portraits. They are all imperative in the yearbook and I'm not 100% familiar with the best tactics, and techniques available. What tips and what ways do you have to bring out the best of people for projects such as this.

Thanks, and I'll very much appreciate all of the help everyone here can give me.

For a project this big, buddy up with somebody as your "assistant", quickly.  Learning together sometimes goes quicker than doing it all on your own.

I agree, sadly, out of an entire high school of 1200 students, I am the only student I know who is passionate about photography. The next closest person would be your typical teenage girl taking hundreds of photos of themselves with their smartphone.

I am still looking though, maybe there is a diamond in the rough for this project.

HEY!!!  If that typical teenage girl has a talent for posing people (other than herself), she will be worth her weight in gold!

seriously

That's where they are no longer typical :P  They would then become a potential assistant if they can at least pose people or be able to take photos of people other than herself.
