How to take a 1-7 day exposure.

6 years 5 months ago #382305 by Holt
I am about to buy ND filters. I have a family members birthday coming up in a month, and I would like to take a 1-7day long exposure as a gift. I know it's possible, and I won't get it right the first time. But I think if I get them now I might just get lucky. My question is, does anyone know how many strong ND filters I would need? And do I need different filters too, or only ND? Anyone who can help on this question, it would be really great, thanks! D3100 Camera. Will use a 18-55 lens.

Um, a 1 to 7 day exposure of what?

The longer you leave the shutter open, the less likely you are to record anything that is moving, even at a modest rate. There's a Mark Wallace video showing how to create an "empty" freeway using a long exposure (30 s?) and an ND filter.

To directly answer your question, do the math: every stop doubles the time, so (e.g.) a 10-stop ND will cause a 1 sec exposure to go to 17 minutes. Another 7 stops will get you to just over 1.5 days.

Canvas vs paper...which one is better? Personally, I prefer canvas because it looks great, is long-lasting, and can be very budget-friendly.
