Planning on taking a sunset portrait with ring light; any tips?

I wanted to share with you guys an idea for a photo that I want to take, and wanted to see if anyone had any tips I could use to make it quick and easy.

The photo I'm going for is of a friend of mine. I envision taking a photo of him at sunset, not smiling, with the ring light shining on him, and giving catchlights in his eyes, with the sunset showing up very well in the background. Fall will soon be upon us and sunsets like what I'm wanting will soon be out of the picture, so I need to get to it soon!

My question is, what tips would you have for getting good catchlights with the ring light, especially considering he wears glasses? I was thinking of having him put his head down ever so slightly, to try to eliminate the incident angle reflection of the light and still allow the catchlights to show through.

As for the sunset showing up well, is there a way to capture that in the image, or would it be easier in post?

Thanks so much for your responses, in advance! :)

The first thing you want to do is to get the sunset right. Then
set the flash… possibly in TTL to start and tweak manually.

As for the glasses. the major problem is if the glasses are flat.
If they are convex, they should be a lesser worry. Eventually, a
slight movement to a side or lowering the head — or both —
may get you the result you're after. Good luck! :)

Light is free… capturing it is not!

The previous advice is good, but I'm curious...
" Fall will soon be upon us and sunsets like what I'm wanting will soon be out of the picture, so I need to get to it soon!"

Do we stop having sunsets in the fall?

Why so serious?
