How to zoom in when shooting video and not get jumpy footage?

4 years 7 months ago #657739 by Remy Hedrick
As headline questions, when you are shooting video and you want to zoom in.  How can this be done so that the footage looks smooth?  When I do it, the ending results looks jumpy and almost uneven movement.

I'm shooting on a Sony A7s if it makes any difference.

:thx2:

Depends more on the lens than which body you are using.

You need a follow focus system

To do this, go to Camera. Take a video. Pinch your fingers in to zoom closer and out to move away. A bar with a plus on one end a minus on the other will appear on the screen.

Did anyone mention a mobile phone? I didn't think so. The OP clearly said Sony A7s.

To the OP:

A dedicated video camera will have a rocker switch for wide <-> narrow, and settings for controlling how the zoom operates. You're using the wrong equipment.

Your other option is to shoot in 4K and handle all of that in post to create HD output. But that might not be acceptable due to frame rate and codec limitations in 4K on most cameras.
