Newbie question.. tips on how to take this type of beach photograph?

Hey gang,

I'm not sure why this didn't post the first time I tried, but hopefully the second time's the charm.

I'm hoping to get your expertise on how to achieve the following photo when my wife and I visit Cabo again for our anniversary?  I absolutely love Sarah Orbanic's composition here, so if someone can tell me how to achieve this shot with the sand appearing as "wings", that would be great.  I'm looking for things like how to throw/drop the sand as well as how I should be shooting this for the same effect, fast/slow shutter, wide open or more closed aperture, etc...   Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Let's start with the surroundings. The is a natural lit area in a cave etc near the ocean. The model held as much sand in her hands as possible and could have even been bent over at the waist. Then in one full motion slowly open her hands as she extend/reached upward. In other word this was a timed exposed with multiple image stacking in order to make the model appear perfectly still or in focus towards the center of the frame. However looking at her legs, were not completely still. There could have been a single speedlight or flash used but I doubt it. Also, I have a feeling this all didnt happen in a single shot.. several shots while the camera was on a tripod etc.. then image stacking.

Oh wow... ok, that's a lot more complex than I thought it was and evidently would require a decent amount of Photoshop and/or Lightroom savvy to stack those images together to form a working composite.  Thanks for the thought!

Jeff
