Please help me understand this

I'm watching a video on You Tube about neutral gradient filters and how to use them. They are referencing a "2 stop" neutral gradient filter and saying to go down 2 stops on the camera.

Ok, so I'm looking threw my camera's eye piece at what the camera shows as good exposure, how do you know what is "2 stops"?

If you are shooting in auto exposure, the camera will figure it out. Else look at the reading without the filter and reduce by 2 stops f/10 would go to 7.1, f/9 would go to 6.3.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Thank you so much, just to clarify when you say shooting in auto exposure are you talking about the camera in "Auto" mode? Where the camera is calculating everything?

Also I'm a little lost. When I look into my eye piece and move my aperture to f/10 and turn it down, I get F9, F8, then F7.1 wouldn't that be 3 stops?

Yes it is three.

But depend on what that type of camera you are using you can also bracket down or up.

Look for a button that has a (+/-) Hold it down and turn the thumb wheel. +2 is two stops up. but let you move in degrees of a F stop if you want.

The filter is just a sunglasses for your lens lets less light enter.
