Question about Photoshop CS5 vs Lightroom 3

13 years 4 months ago #8607 by Tarb1968
I'm looking to be able to play around with photos and touch them up a bit. I know about Photoshop but don't own it yet. I was wondering if Lightroom 3 would do all the photo editing I would want or would I still need to purchase Photoshop?

Thanks

Keith

Well PS/CS in any flavor is a very powerful tool. I have been working with it for years and, it has taken alot of time to get it down. Lightroom on the other hand is still powerful but, has less of a learning curve to optimize. Im still learning to use CS everytime I open it and, I have been at it since Photoshop 2.0. So you have to decide which is best for you. You should really go to adobe.com/ and down load the try it versions of both programs first. This way you dont spend alot of money on a program you wont use.

I'm with you Keith. I'm looking into it as well. i'm probably going for the Lightroom though because of price, the archival qualities, and what little i actually need to do to my photos. I'm not into big alterations. All i have are negative scans that i may need to remove dust and scratches from, and slightly adjust brightness/darkness, contrast and minimal color variances like a photo lab would do in normal film processing. I just bought a canon printer that prints up to 13x19" prints. I think Lightroom would be good to have for the minimal editing and archiving/organizing of photos.
Let me know what you end up doing and how well it works for you and i'll do the same.

Lightroom is fine for basic cropping, straitening, and color corrections. However it's major strengths are the data base features. It was designed from the ground up to be a total workflow solution for photographers outputting large amount of images on a regular basis. If an image needs major work, I still prefer to use photoshop, but for the majority of my images lightroom is all I need.

I'm primary a PC guy, and was thinking about Lightroom, but was told that this is a stronger program on Mac's. While this topic is hot, is there any truth to that statement, does Lightroom work better on a Mac?

It shouldn't matter if you have a PC or Mac, the program is going to be the same for each.

I have Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3.

Like it's been said Lightroom is great for alot of work that needs to be done quickly. It's easier to use then Photoshop.

Photoshop is so much more then editing photos. Lightroom was made specifically for photographers not graphic designers.

So to answer your question, yes lightroom will do everything you want.. as long as your plan is to only enchance your photos and not make some graphic.

Everyday I am back and forth on both programs. Depending what I plan on doing with a photo, depends on what I use. Sometimes I'll edit the photo first in Lightroom then switch to Photoshop and edit the same photo there. That's one of the great things about Lightroom, it allows you to take your edit photo and import it into Photoshop without the need of saving it and reopening into photoshop.
