Tripod help for a beginner?

8 years 2 months ago #470077 by JuliaSmith15
So, I made the mistake of purchasing a tripod from Target. And I hate it, lol. My Canon 70D is too heavy for it, since whenever its on the tripod it tilts downward. :/ And I honestly feel like every time I put it on, I'm doing it wrong. You screw the camera on right?

What is a good tripod for a beginner, and a 70D? And does the head matter? I just need someone to point me to a tripod and I'll buy it! I trust you guys lol.

Forgot to include!
I want a tripod to help me make nice equine videos. My 70D allows me to take videos, and I love the quality. So I'm planning on making action horse videos, and videos of the horses peacefully in their paddocks. :)

Still photographers love ball heads.  But for video you will NOT want a ball head!!!  I am not into video, just know that a good video tripod setup can be pretty heavy.  Links for various ideas on tripod selection -

Well anything photographic from Target is going to be very consumer budget friendly, which generally means, not the best quality.  Tripods are one of those items you don't want to skimp on.   What sort of budget are you working with?  FYI for about $300 to $400 you can get yourself a pretty good tripod.

Thanks for all the help! Would this be a good tripod for me to start with?

Marginal.  As soon as it arrives try shooting some video with slow pans.  If those results are not smooth, then return it immediately.

There are a few tripods that are around the $200 range that are a very good value and will be MUCH better than the one that you are referencing. Look at 3 Legged Thing or Vanguard.  Both have affordable options.

With tripods cheap, and good are never together. That Sunpak you posted is not much better than what you got at Target I am sorry to tell you.

I concur..... Best to spend more upfront & avoid having to replace them every so often
