Tripod for macro photography

8 years 3 weeks ago #473090 by Rob Conley
I've been working on my nature macro work and my tripod doesn't have any arms that go swinging off it.  Or allowing my camera to be pointed downwards.

I've seen a few of you are seemingly big into insect and other forms of macro work.  You mind me asking what tripod are you using?

If you can swing it, look at some of the higher end 3 legged thing tripods, they are nice

Canon 7D & 1D MK III, Canon 10-22mm, 16-35mm f2.8L II, 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f2.8L IS, 300mm f2.8L IS, 200mm f2L IS, 50mm f1.4, 50mm f1.2L, 85mm f1.

I don't care for their small line of tripods, go with RRS

Macro is my niche & I seldom use a tripod unless I'm stacking or possibly when shooting static subjects. When shooting insects, most won't sit still long enough for one to get a tripod set up...I rely on additional lighting for my macro shooting. My Flickr stream has lots of macro images & almost none  are where a tripod was used. BTW, I have a 3 Legged Thing CF travel tripod and have no complaints. That said, it doesn't have the center column that adjusts as you state, but bear in mind that the use of a center column that swings out means the whole unit becomes less stable & the maximum load capacity it less as well...

I like the mid sizes Manfrotto tripods that allow you to reverse the centre post to hang below the tripod. I do prefer my mono pod as it gives me a nice amount of stability without restricting my ability to reframe the shot.

Manfrotto all the way for me.

Like Scott said, tripods are difficult to work with when you're photographing insects. By the time you get set up, they might fly away, so a lot of experienced macro photographers don't use a tripod in many instances for that very reason. If you've got enough light, you can speed up the shutter and avoid camera shake. You might try more light and not have to worry about a new tripod.
