Memory Cards for Video Question

6 years 3 months ago #558514 by Adam West
For me, the whole memory card thing is a bit confusing.

I would like to find the very best card for shooting video with my Canon 70D. I'm planning on purchasing a
Zhiyun Crane V2 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer and Cannon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens this week.

I haven't done much video. I've been using Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s 64 GB (10). Do I need something different or better for better video results?

Thanks.

Your gimbal and lens choice are irrelevant. The only issue is moving data from the sensor to the memory card. And that depends upon video and data format. A compressed format will consist of less data (MP4, MOV).

Also: the issue is write speed to the card, not read speed. That class 10 rating is for read speed. Most of the "Ultra" models are almost as fast writing as reading now, but you'll need to investigate media recommendations from your manufacturer.

That said, I can tell you that my Pany G7 shooting 4k video runs about 100mpbs (megabits per second) or perhaps 10 MB/s. No problems with writing to my Sandisk Ultras (80 MB/s). Clearly, HD video will have lower requirements.

You mention "better" video. That has nothing to do with the card, or data rate. That has to do with your skill with your equipment and knowledge of light. And it's not as easy as it looks. Good luck.

As Gary pointed out, the card is most important of out of items you mentioned.  That card should be ok for what you are looking to do with it.

B&H or one of the camera retailers just had a 128GB card on sale a few weeks ago.  Space will be the only thing you need, well depending on how much you plan to shoot.  Video taxes space fast.
