Hey gang.  Out of curiosity, which tripod is considered to be top of the line for 2018?  Meaning which is the best?

Define “best”?  And why would that change from year to year?

Tripods are not usually updated or re-designed that often for example the last major update of the Gitzo series 5 was 2016 and the Traveler range a year earlier. It depends, you can pay well in excess of $1000 for a carbon Fiber structure that has a maximum load weight of 25 kilos + or over $600 for a CF travel tripod, both could be "top of the line" for what they need to achieve. If you are a wildlife photographer using $10,000 long primes your needs would be different to someone mostly using a walk about lens or short primes..

:agree:  good point.  In general, I think Gitzo and RRS are the market leaders in terms of quality

RRS and Gitzo are considered the best and are expensive but you get a great tripod that should last a very long time. I would also add Pro Media Gear to this list. Not cheap either but should compete very well with the RRS and Gitzo Tripods. I'm saving now for the Pro Media TR344L 71" Stix and their BH1 PMG Ball Head. I'm 6'3 and find I need the taller tripod more so for uneven ground, hills and standing in rivers with uneven bottoms. I think we'll be hearing about this company more as photographers start using their gear.

I'm very happy with my 3 Legged Thing Albert. Tall. Excellent price point, as well.

Probably Really Right Stuff.  I don't care for them  because of leg locks.  I prefer the lever locks.  I use 30 year old aluminum tripods with modern ball heads (RRS included.)  They are plain old stable.

Best?

Yeah, I'm not surprised to see many different names for this.  RRS would be my answer.
