What are tripod centers that swivel for?

I noticed that some tripods have a center base plate that has a 2-3" center that can be loosened up and swiveled.

What is that for?

That is called a levelling base and is, IMO, indispensable
when using a gimbal head or panoramic head, I have 3.

In order to achieve perfect horizon, the levelling base is a
must — unless you want to spend the time to adjust the
tripod so its plateau will be horizontal.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

OP - are you talking about where the ball head or gimbal sits?

If so, there you go!  If that's what you are speaking about, Nikon Shooter got that one for you.

Thats what I need. Was attempting to pan on a gimbal head the other day and noticed this issue.
