Just bought used RRS tripod, has some sand in legs, cleaning question

5 years 3 months ago #627106 by Fess Walker
So when you extend the legs, you can hear and slightly feel the gritty sand in the legs.  If I remove the compression lock, can I take a micro fiber cloth and wipe down the legs and put back together?  Or is there any complicated steps to putting these things back together?  No grease or anything special used in side these things?

I got a good deal on this tripod, I was about to pull the trigger on a Gitzo or Pro Media, then this RRS jumped in front of me.  Too good to pass up.  Now I'm hoping this sand can be remove.

I'm a heavy Gitzo (4) user and when I have to clean
one, I disassemble, wash and, if necessary, put back
some original grease. Be careful to put it ONLY whe-
re it has to be… RRS's site should tell you that.

Tripods use grease in them?

You sure about that?

The screws to lock the legs in position only but yes,
these are lubricated. Be careful not to lubricate the
legs nor the rings

You know there are people who have done this too!

My husband cleaned my tripod and just note that there is small plastic cap on each inside piece that needs to go into a grove just right when putting all back together.

The locking knobs tend to be jumpy or demand some force
when not lubricated. Legs and ring must have some grip so
lubricating them will make the tripod unstable.
