RRS Tripod Spikes

5 years 2 months ago #632440 by Ruby Grace
I have a couple icy shoots coming up and I'm trying to decide if I want to use the spikes from RRS.  For what they are, they seem kind of pricey considering they are just a hunk of metal.   Obviously, if they work, then what value can I put on that.  Just not sure how effective are they.

Comments are welcome.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 17-40mmL, 24-105mmL, 100-400mmL, 300mm f/4L IS, Sigma 12-24mm, 430EX, Extension tubes

RRS is very pricy but when one buys into a system…

Spikes are brilliant at doing what they're expected to
do and the quality of RRS products is a sure thing, a
lifetime investment.

I do have spikes for two of my four tripods, of another
good brand though.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

They are a solution for a problem. Thus, you need them or you don't.

I have little claw feet for my 3LT, for both rocks and ice, and I'm very happy with them. The $60 seemed a bit excessive, but they're very, very well machined and high quality. And the let my keep the rubber feet for indoors only. So, yeah, alternate feet are worth it.

The cool part is that they can work well on rocks too.  So you'll likely get more mileage out of them.

I was just looking these up, those spikes are big!  Can you even carry them on an airplane?

Luggage. Likely they'll get seen on a scan and then you'll have a problem.

As has been discussed in another thread, tripod in the luggage.
