Synology or Drobo physical hard drives vs SSD drives?

Just wondering when you think about how small storage space has gotten.  Why haven't they gone to SSD drives and smaller body sizes?

I am assuming cost. SSD tech, while much more affordable than ever, is still expensive. I am also not sure they can make an SSD that small with that kind of storage, can they?

There are physical limitations to HD capacity but great
production volumes, they got cheaper and more reliable.

I use a 2 TB SSD in my iMAC and 4x WD-NAS Red/4 TB
HDs in a QNAP unit as TimeMachine.

I guess all memory will be flash- based in the future.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I saw an article maybe 1-2 years back that  mentioned SSD sizes in the 60TB range. We've not seen anything yet. And the form factor will not change.

Why does one need fast storage on a backup device? Cheap, reliable space for a NAS is all you need.

Note that a NAS is not the same as an external hard drive. That's a different beast. That's where SSDs could come into play, but you're also limited by the transfer rate of the wire/connection. You need USB 3.1 or eSATA devices to take advantage of an SSD that's externally attached.

So, as is often the case, "it depends". There's no single answer here, because there are a number of variables.
