When is a monopod better than a tripod?

4 years 7 months ago #659033 by Bill Rosen
I'm trying to determine if I need a monopod.  During what situations would you say a monopod is better than a tripod?

Simple question, just curious from those who use one.

Thank you

IMO, when you need to be more mobile. I find myself using my tripod most times.  I like to use one when I photograph horses with a 200 mm lens or longer in a “free play” areas. If it’s in an arena, I’ll use one when there isn’t a lot of room.

G'day Bill

I use both mono & tripod at various times & places. The mono is a very useful tool, possibly [for me] more so than the tripod. I use it while bushwalking, while shooting long lens stuff, while shooting poor-light / longer shutter speed than hand-held stuff and so on

My monopod is a DIY affair - a painter's telescopic handle with a tripod mount on top instead of the paint roller connection ... ie: extremely strong, collapses to around 30" / 75cm and extends to eye-level & beyond for ease of use

Hope this helps

Monopods can be quite handy. You go into any church in Europe, and you won't be able to use a tripod. A monopod, however, may be enough to get interior shots in dark buildings. And if you get something like a 3 Legged Thing Trent with Docz feet, your monopod can stand up by itself.

I use mine for event shooting where I'm in the same position for minutes at a time. Holding up a body + 70-200 gets tiring real quick.

A tripod is the evident better solution anywhere until
space tight working conditions get in the equation.

A monopod needs less real estate, is at risk to be kicked.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
