ProMaster and 3 Legged Thing tripods made in same factory?

4 years 2 months ago #675337 by J Photo Man
I have a 3 Legged Thing tripod, and my buddy just picked up a ProMaster tripod and we went shooting yesterday and boy these tripods look very alike.  Based on what I have been able to find out, these are not the same companies, but do both of these companies get their tripods made at the same factory?  Then each company has their branding and minor differences added?

3LTs are built in England, I believe. The ProMaster is a cheap knockoff, not to mention design theft.

3 Legged Thing only exercise clever choice of words: "British Designed & Engineered."

However they buy their tripods from China as well.

Ah, very good. But let's continue to pick nits.

They have them manufactured in China, to their specs. The quality of the manufacturing seems quite high (to me, based on what I've purchased), and I am of the opinion that a certain level of quality requires a certain price point. Lower prices always seem to involve compromise, often in critical components.

My guess is that ProMaster is having an inferior product produced with a slightly modified design. I could be wrong, as it doesn't always work out that way. I am happy, however, to pay the originator of a design for their work. Not a fan of imitations.

(Full disclosure: I own some ProMaster light stands, some of which I'm very happy with, some not so much. I don't know if they're copies... can't find anything similar.)

Perhaps someone else has additional info? Would like to know more.

I think some put too much negative thought on items manufactured in China.  There are a lot more products than you likely think being made there.  While there are plenty of cheap and poorly constructed things coming from there.  There are also products with high quality coming from there as well.  Just saying.

It's like when things were first made in Japan.... The first items were of poor quality. Then the quality improved and the prices rose as well...You pretty much get what you pay for no matter where it's from...

True, and honestly it really depends on the manufacture out of China too.  Some are simply better than others.
