Carbon fiber vs aluminum for monopod?

12 years 11 months ago #66439 by Stanly
So I'm looking at getting a monopod and was wondering is there really that much difference between the carbon fiber vs aluminum? Really... how much weight difference could be there? I'm guessing this monopod will serve as a walking stick for me too. Whats your opinion on the Manfrotto or Gitzo monopods?

What I have noticed is that the very expensive, carbon fiber tripods are very light for their size, and the more affordable models don't seem much lighter than similar aluminum models.

Edit: Whoops, I need to read better. Didn't catch on that it was monopods you were talking about.

With a monopod you won't notice much difference in weight. I would just go with the aluminum.

Aluminum is more durable, this is especially true if you shoot in gritty enviroments like I do. That and if you are not gentle with your equipment then aluminum. While the stresses you will put on the CF are not great you can ruin anything CF if you scratch it deep to hit the fibers, which I can do in a heart beat. Whith aluminum you can snad out a scratch if it makes a section stick.

I have both Manfrotto and Benro aluminum monopods and love both of them. I shoot with the pod all through hockey season and don't find wieght to be a problem just closed length on the Manfrotto is a bit longer as it is a three section unit v the four section benro

I have aluminum. Nothing about CF ever appealed to me. Wood gives you good vibration absorption for a lot less $$$.

:)

mj, that Berlebach should arrive today. It didn't take 2-3 months as they said.

Mine's aluminum and works perfectly for what I need it for.
