A common beginner photography mistake is to overexpose images for fear of them being too dark. But pros understand that sometimes a dark image is precisely what’s warranted. In this photo by Margo Taussig Pinkerton, the dark surroundings help draw the eye to the light-filled boats on the shore. The contrast here is excellent, and the darkness in the foreground and background help set the boats apart in the image. Great work, Margo!
