What inspired you to become a photographer?

My childhood. I always dreamed becoming an astronaut and flying around the empty space, asking to myself about stars, planets, galaxies and all the things that my eyes could see on the sky night. Some years later when I was 26 years old, I found a way to capture some of the things that was running on my mind about night on the sensor of a camera, so I thought “ this is a great excuse for trips, to dream, for capture stars, learn about universe and create some albums about the things that I always dreamed about “.

So, what inspired me to become a photographer was the idea to be an astronaut inside the planet who shows people how near we are from the stars and how amazing that feels catch the starlight’s, persons and landscape on photographs, how amazing feels getting the story of the universe on one shot.

Tell us about your first photo that really validated your interest as a photographer.

My first photo was one on the living room of my home including some chairs and a clock on the wall, I was testing my first new camera just to see if it was working right ;)

I think my first real photo was on my first night trip with a night sky full of stars, the milky way straight to me, a cold wind flowing on the air, alone in the dark with non feeling of afraid at all, I felt amazing on it, that’s how the story begins and that moment takes me where I am right now.

What do you enjoy photographing the most?

Astro photography.
Milky Way with landscape, persons or concept art on it.
Landscapes.

What has been your proudest moment as a photographer?

May this will sound ridiculous but the proudest moment for me is each time than I show a new picture from my camera to my 2 years old little girl and listening her saying “Galaxy Papa” it makes me feel fully and proud. Inspire my little girl makes me feel that I am doing things right. If I have to choose a second moment it would be when I was chosen by others to teach my knowledge to people on another country like Peru and cities as Boyacá in Colombia.

How do you feel photography has impacted the way you see the world?

Photography has changed my perspective of life, photograph makes me a better person, helps me to find the places that people not used to look for “Landscapes at night”, photography gives me reasons to wake up happy at morning and go thankful to bed, photography for me is an a story which begins at the perfect moment to show people how different places and moments in the world looks like on a image frozen in time.

What is your best photography related tip?

I use to say to my students that I love the expression that people do when they see some of my pictures but for me whole the experience behind the scenes is which gives the real price. So one important tip is work with the scene and try to think how hard was to get be in that moment to get the photograph, cause you can learn Technique with time and effort but in night landscapes the moment its just one instant and every moment can change in just one second. Put all your focus in get the best of the moment and mix your tools, your technique, the scene, your ideas and inspirations to get a great composition.

What would you like for people take away from your work?

With my work I try to create some kind of sensations and great feelings on people. What I try to give with my work is:

  • Transport the people to the scenes where I have been through my photographs of night.
  • Show to the people the reality about our Galaxy and how it looks in clear nights or the way I call it “the story of the universe“
  • Teach Techniques, Compositions, Tips, Theory and all that I know on Astro Photography
  • Give a nice sensation and a peaceful feeling to the person who looks my compositions
  • I love when people share my work to others, is nice giving something to talk about.

What are some ‘must have’ items in your camera bag?

The most important ones are my Camera Nikon D800 my lens Nikon 14–24 and Nikon 24–70, tripod, two head lanterns for security and a large one lantern just for composition, a intervalometer for long exposures “more than 30 seconds”, batteries for my camera and batteries for lanterns too, clean velvet cloths “ for clean the lens, extra clothes and jacket, radios, my Ipod “ the Music is a very important tool for me, it keeps me inspire and it joins me when I am walking alone in the night too “, a notebook and pen to write my new ideas and the things I need to improve in my process. if I have enough space on my bag some coffee for cold nights ;)

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what is the ONE photography book you would want to have with you?

If I was stuck on a desert island I hope to have a notebook and a pen with me so I can write all the experience on there, try to describe what my eyes did see on clear nights and when I got back home. Get my camera take some pictures inspired on my trip and write my own book with those results and the letter on my notebook with the idea to inspire people to write and capture their experiences as well.
