Running out of battery power in your camera is one of the worst things that can happen if you’re a photographer. Part of that is because the Universe somehow creates all these amazing photo opportunities right around you, just as you struggle to turn it on again in hope of getting just one more shot. If you've had this happen to you at least once, raise your hand.

Luckily, I've learned my lesson and I know pack at least two spare batteries for my DSLRs.

But things have changed in other directions as well. In the past few years, I've only taken a small percentage of my personal work with my DSLRs. I've been taking most of those photos with my smartphone, and I guess you could say I'm one of those comfortable photographers who is happy that powerful technology is being delivered in smaller packages. All jokes aside, I always have my phone with me and a lot of the work I shoot with it is fine art and street photography. One of my usual practices is hitting the streets on Monday mornings at 8 when it’s the most crowded and snapping away discreetly until lunch time.

However doing that and having a 4G data connection on all the time will take its toll on your battery, regardless of what device you're using. I can't tell you how many times I've had to call it quits when things were getting interesting because my battery just couldn't take it anymore and my phone would even shut down sometimes.

I started looking for solutions. Carrying a spare battery like in the old days of mobile technology is out of the question for anyone using an iPhone or a unibody smartphone.

I eventually found the answer in the Wolverine Backup Battery called “Colossal”. It's basically a massive 18200 mAh power reserve that will keep your device running for days in a row. It's the ideal solution for whenever you are away from an outlet or you simply don't have the time to get to one.

The cool thing about it is that you can charge anything that will charge via USB port: iPads, GoPro Hero 3, camcorders and point-n-shoots.

For anyone who travels a lot or shoots mostly outdoors, this little power pack is a must have.
