If you don't already know, a professional photographer spends on average a third of his or her time advertising their photography business. If you don't do that, there is little chance of having a sustainable lifestyle by taking photos. There are a lot of ways to market your photography business, but many young pros don't have a budget for it right from the beginning. Luckily, there are free ways to get seen and we want to share four of them with you.

Instagram

Good old Instagram is still one of the best, free ways to promote your photography business. In a sea of users from all walks of life and with all possible interests, you can target your ideal customers with a few networking skills and the right hash tags. It actually does a lot of the work for you when it comes to mobile marketing, especially considering the amount of time people spend using their phones rather than in front of computers. www.Instagram.com

Other businesses

This is potentially one of the most effective ways of getting your business seen by interested clients. It works using the ancient principle "you scratch my back, I scratch yours". You won't have to pay any money, but you will have to return the favor. Let's say you're a fashion photographer. You probably know one or two hairstylists and MUAs in your local area. Have them post a link to your online portfolio on their website, and do the same for them. The same goes if you're a wedding photographer. Reach out to local florists, wedding planners or videographers and recommend each other. It might not be the most evolved form of advertising, but it definitely works.

Local listings

Local listings are very useful, particularly if you live in large metropolitan areas. Use sites like Yelp, Yellow Pages or Foursquare because people often turn to them when they look for various services, including photography. Make sure your business is nice and visible if you want clients knocking on your door.

YouTube

Using YouTube to promote your photography business will take some extra effort, but in the long run it can be totally worth it. Besides your awesome photos, you probably have more you can share with the world, particularly your knowledge and experience. You can make all kinds of videos from field demonstrations to Lightroom and Photoshop techniques. www.YouTube.com
