Color is very important, particularly when your subject is a beautiful flower. But there's one thing you have to be careful about: the background. A nice looking flower is always going to be a good subject no matter how experienced you are. Sure, it's more likely to attract you if you're a beginner, but it can still impose challenges for an experienced photographer.
Photographing flowers is often regarded as a cliché, but the truth is that it can land you some beautiful fine art shots. It's all about how you do it and that's were skill and experience come in handy. A good macro or telephoto lens is also going to be helpful.
As I mentioned earlier, the background is very important. The last thing you want is to have to photograph a beautiful flower next to a boring white background or something that takes away its beauty. Look for interesting backgrounds and don't be afraid to look for colored ones. This is one of those cases when adding more color will produce better results.
If you're shooting natural flowers and the background isn't that interesting, try shooting with a long lens and an open aperture, just enough to blur it.
Flower arrangements can also be beautiful subjects, especially those hanging from windows like the ones on Burano Island in Italy.
