Hawaii is definitely one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country and it’s no surprise that it’s the choice of many newlyweds and adventure lovers. But it’s also one of the hottest destinations for photographers. You don’t need to be an advanced amateur or a pro to take breath-taking shots of Hawaii because it is a land that is very generous with everyone who seeks incredible photographs.
Probably the best way to come home with awesome photos from Hawaii is to choose a good workshop. We highly recommend the Hawaii Workshop hosted by photographer Russ Lawry on the beautiful island of Kauai.
Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and it’s the fourth largest in the archipelago. The tour will take you to some of the island’s most beautiful locations; many only known to locals and Russ. The workshop will be an active one with a few short easy to moderately strenuous trails that will provide you with plenty of opportunities for memorable shots.
You will go to bed late and get up early as good light is particularly important for landscape and nature photography and there is a lot to see. During the workshop the group will take the first part of the trail between Ke’e beach and Hanakapiai beach. It’s a slow paced walk with plenty of opportunities to capture the shots you’re after.
There is always something to photograph on Kauai Island, regardless of kind of photography you love most. If you’re a landscape and nature photographer, the extraordinary landscape will keep you busy throughout the workshop. If you love macro photography and shooting plants and flowers, you will be happy to know the island has two gardens, McBride Gardens in the south and Limahuli gardens on the north side of the island. They are home to the largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, including orchids, flowering trees, palms and many other species. The McBride Gardens, for example, is known for one of the largest tropical plant collections in the world.
One of the days of the photo adventure will include a sunset dinner cruise along the Na Pali Coast where participants can capture pictures of Kauai’s rugged western coastline. Along the way, you may also be treated to flying fish and dolphins.
In terms of gear, a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a few lenses will do the trick. Don’t forget to pack a wide angle lens (your kit lens should be fine), a tripod and a couple of filters like a circular polarizer and a neutral density filter.
The climate on Kauai is mild and although it is the wettest of the islands, escaping bad weather is simply a matter of moving on another side of the island.
