If you own a Nikon DX format DSLR there are very little if any reasons not to own. The 35mm f/1.8G was designed to be the nifty fifty of the crop sensor world. As soon as you mount it on the camera, you get the equivalent of a 50mm lens that’s actually more awesome than the classic fifty.
The optical assembly is made of eight elements positioned in six groups. The lens weighs only 7 oz. and has a 52mm filter thread. The mount is made of metal which increases the lens’s durability and resistance to long term usage.
But the real strong point of this lens is its brightness. At f/1.8 it’s more than ready to deal with low light situations. Mount it on a camera like the D7200 and you’ve got yourself a killer low light kit.
The bokeh is superb, despite this being a crop lens. It blurs the background beautifully and that makes it an awesome portrait lens. The focal length is well suited for a number of subjects. As I mentioned earlier, it’s a great portrait lens, but you can also shoot landscapes, street photography (the small size really helps) and a lot of other stuff. It’s really a versatile little monster.
The focusing is done using only the rear elements, so nothing external moves. This gives it the enormous advantage of not having to suck air and dust inside like lenses with external moving elements do.
So far so good, but I know what you’re eager to find out. Is it a sharp lens? Well the simple fact that it’s a prime lens should give you enough clues. Most of them are pretty sharp. The 35mm f/1.8G however is a performer. The details you can capture with this little guy are pretty impressive and that’s true even for older cameras like the D90 and D7000. It really is a must-have for any DX format user and it will complement the classic 50mm f/1.8 very well.
