Back in April, we reported on a rumor that a Nikon mirrorless camera was in the works.

Well, now the dreams of Nikon fans have come true has the project has been officially announced by the Japanese company.

Unfortunately, the announcement on Facebook offers no details whatsoever about the upcoming camera, save for the fact that it is actually mirrorless and that the camera will use a "groundbreaking new mount" that "explores a new level of optical performance."

The official press release offers a little more information, noting that "an F-Mount adapter is being developed that will enable the use of a wide variety of F-Mount NIKKOR lenses with the new camera."

That's good news for folks that have already committed thousands of dollars to Nikon lenses!

Editor's Tip: Not sure if you have enough cash to buy Nikon's new mirrorless camera? Sell your old gear and use the proceeds to upgrade your kit.

In addition to the Facebook post announcing the project, Nikon released the teaser video below, which, as you will see, is heavy on the production value, but, offers virtually no details about the camera.

However, what we do learn in the video is that this camera will have a large LCD, an electronic viewfinder, and we get to see that new, much bigger lens mount, too.

Nikon Rumors managed to learn that the camera is actually coming to market very soon. It has reported that the release date for the camera is less than a month away on August 23, 2018.

They also managed to snag a real-world photo of the camera being used, which you can see below.

Also of note is that Nikon makes a point in the press release about their new mirrorless camera that they will continue to be committed to developing their DSLR cameras, too:

"Nikon will continue to lead imaging innovation with the launch of the new mirrorless camera and the continued development of Nikon Digital-SLR cameras as well as the impressive NIKKOR lens lineup," says Nikon. "Soon, Nikon users will have two industry-leading camera systems to choose from, giving consumers the choice to enjoy the unique values that each system offers."

I'm excited to see what they've come up with in the new full frame mirrorless Nikon camera. That excitement comes from being a Nikon shooter and just being a photographer in general.

However, as I've said before, I hope this isn't too little, too late.

Nikon (and Canon) really dropped the ball on the mirrorless front, if you ask me.

And with Sony churning out unbelievable mirrorless camera after unbelievable mirrorless camera, Nikon and Canon have their work cut out for them in the mirrorless department.

At least now we know there isn't much more of a wait before we get to see what Nikon is bringing to the table!

If you're ready to dive into the world of Nikon mirrorless, list your old gear for sale, save up your money, and be prepared to dish out a pretty penny for this new rig.

Though there aren't any details about pricing, I'll be amazed if this camera doesn't exceed the $3,000 mark.

We'll find out soon!
