Sonoma County, California is known throughout the world for its vineyards and winery; and that part of the county’s more than 500,000 acres is certainly inviting and caters to affluent travelers and visitors. It’s the 17 miles of coastline from Bodega Head to Vista Trail that may be Sonoma’s hidden treasure – and one that welcomes adventurers, hikers and photographers.
This rocky coast is both spectacular and subtle in its natural beauty. The seaside environment consists of a series of chiseled headlands overlooking long sandy beaches. Time and the wind and waves have created secluded coves and natural arches of rock against which the sea crashes on its wildest days and gently laps when tame. Visit Salt Point in Salt Point State Park to see how the relentless power of the waves has carved the soft sandstone rock into caverns with strange openings and elaborate channels. Foggy, misty summer mornings are perfect for serious photographers who want to capture these wild areas in soft, mysterious light.
For viewing and photographing the seabirds of the Sonoma Coast, the best location is where the Russian River ends its journey to the Pacific. The major natural feature is Goat Rock around which ospreys, brown pelicans and other California seabirds wheel and glide in search of fish and suitable nesting sites.
