Spend any amount of time in Tuscany and it seems all the elements of life – physical, spiritual and emotional – are mixed in a magical potion of happiness. No doubt, part of the reason is that enlightened peoples have populated this region for approximately 3,000 years, starting with the Etruscans, for which Tuscany is named.
Their spirit and influence still lingers in the early morning mist of the gentle, rolling landscapes and the timeless villages that cling to craggy hilltops. All of Tuscany is also bathed in a magical light, which has much to do with why it was the birthplace of the Renaissance. Michelangelo and the other masters sensed it and it still exists today to aid the photographer in his or her quest for a masterpiece moment.
Of course, Florence is the heart of Tuscany. As you wander the streets, every turn of the head greets you with grandeur – the Cathedral and the churches of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce, the Piazzale Michelangelo and Palazzo Vecchio and the museums and galleries of the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi. Tuscany is more than the grand; it is also the simply sublime joy of the vineyards and olive groves, the quiet villages and the warm Tuscan coast.
