The clear blue waters, the sparkling sandy beaches, the pleasant tropical breeze and the moonlight on the Pacific are certainly Hawaii’s most iconic vacation images. Although its 8 main islands are well known, Hawaii consists of hundreds of islands in an archipelago that is more than 1,500 miles long.
Hawaii is much more than a beach vacation and luaus; it is one of the most active geological parts of the world where Maunaloa and Kilauea remain active volcanoes, Kilauea since 1983. These are located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the “big island,” providing travelers and photographers with spectacular images of the islands being created before their eyes. It’s also a discovery opportunity, with 150 miles of hiking trails with something new and amazing to see and photograph around every bend.
To experience natural Hawaii, the island of Molokai is the place to be, where a mule ride takes you from 1,700 feet in the highlands to the remote town of Kalaupapa on the peninsula of the same name. Then, you’re sure to stare open-jawed at the world’s tallest sea cliffs on Molokai’s North Shore Pali, soaring to as much as 3,900 feet. On Kauai, every nature lover will be eager to kayak the Wailua River to glide along the greenest tropical jungles and visit two scenic waterfalls: Opaekaa Falls and Wailua Falls.
