Agree,  depends on what the photos are going to be used for.  With a quick underlining explanation that would depend on what size prints would be needed.

If no requirements, then yeah, I'd use what ever I had on me that was able to take quality images for the purpose the client wanted.

Sharon replied to the topic 'Quoting prices over the phone vs meeting in person?' in the forum. 4 hours 14 minutes ago

Maybe think about what information you make available on your website - your portfolio, photos for prospective clients to view, your packages and general price range, etc. Even if you don't have specifics on prices if they had an idea if you were in their price range that might eliminate people that just want cheap.

Then you could refer people to that and ask them to call you once they've taken a look and want to schedule or book a session.

Seems like photographers often do better meeting in person to show prints because once people see them, they may decide they want prints. Pricing seems to vary depending on where you live, but people probably have that in mind right up front and want to get an idea if they can afford you. If they realize you're in their price range then you might want to meet and show them photos in person.

Sharon replied to the topic 'Safety question when photo shoot at client house' in the forum. 4 hours 50 minutes ago

I don't know where you usually do shoots, but why make an exception for this client? Why can't they come to the location you usually use?

Maybe you picked up on something that's telling you this situation could be problematic. So trust your instincts and if your husband acts as your assistant give him something to do, even if it's handing you equipment etc. so there's a reason for him to be there even if it's just as a safety precaution.

Maybe think about having information on your website about photo shoots, if they're in studio or on location, so prospective clients know what to expect. I don't think I'd make an exception unless there was a worthwhile reason (family member who's medically fragile or can't get around much, etc.).

I've worked with kids and families and did home visits as part of my job. We partnered up with other staff who were also seeing the family as needed in neighborhoods where safety was a concern.

If you feel at all like you need to take your husband along, don't hesitate to do that. Better than getting yourself into who knows what kind of situation.

I think it depends on what you're doing, and you need to use whatever you need to get the job done.

I've done sports and events and have used cameras that look like they've been dragged around hockey rinks. Nobody seems to give a rat's, they expect results and don't really care how you get the job done as long as it meets their needs and they're satisfied with the results.

Sharon replied to the topic 'Under what conditions do you let someone use your camera?' in the forum. 5 hours 19 minutes ago

Maybe immediate family, but since they wouldn't know one end of a camera from the other I don't expect they'll ever ask! so easy to say I would. lol

If you're doing work in photography it seems like this would be loaning out equipment you need for your job. Maybe that's a way to approach it. If people ask you could give them an idea where to rent equipment or buy a p&s if they want to do more than use their phone.
