4 Weeks Using an Under $20 Camera Strap

budget camera strapImage Credit: GCShutter via iStock

I've always been a big believer in "you get what you pay for."

In many cases (in photography, in particular), if you try to go cheap, you end up disappointed.

Over the years, I have tested innumerable tripods, camera bags, lenses, camera straps, and other gear. And to be frank, when I've tested budget-friendly items, I've almost always been disappointed.

But in this case, I finally found an inexpensive camera strap (less than $20!) that actually left a good impression on me.

4E3002EE 961D 4FCE B40C 9A5E98A93DD9

Nearly four weeks ago, I ordered a strap from a company called HiiGuy.

Once I got it in the mail, I immediately started putting it through its paces, using it on both my Nikon D850 and my Sony Alpha a6300.

It's an easier task for a camera strap manufacturer to make a strap that's comfortable and capable of carrying a smaller, lighter camera like my a6300, so when I tested the HiiGuy strap with my little Sony, I wasn't too surprised that it performed well.

However, it's a whole different ball game with a big, heavy camera like the D850, especially with an L-bracket  and either a 24-70mm or 70-200mm lens attached.

Yet, my HiiGuy strap did very well - impressively well, in fact - when I paired it with my heavier D850.

With the Nikon and the Sony, the HiiGuy strap offered excellent flexibility and freedom of movement.

By that, I mean that it kept my camera secure by my side, but I never felt like my gear was in my way.

3B3ED2F4 55BD 4DCA 8681 EAB80920ED65

What's more, the clip that attaches the camera to the strap worked perfectly and allowed me to quickly release my cameras when I needed to.

That was an important test for my HiiGuy strap to pass, because when I ordered it on Amazon, I noticed a negative review from about a year ago regarding the clip.

Fortunately, HiiGuy reinvented the clip and completely updated it. Even when I added extra pressure on it by pulling it and my D850 in opposite directions, it held firm and was absolutely rock solid. I never felt any hesitation that the clip couldn't handle the D850 and my 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses.

That feeling of security was helped by the addition of a safety strap that offers a second connection point between the camera and the strap. Talk about a fail-safe setup!

Another big surprise - especially when I used the strap with my D850 - was the level of comfort.

Even with a heavier load, the HiiGuy's big, padded shoulder pad helped disperse the weight of the camera and lens over a wider area, which helped stave off fatigue in my neck and shoulders.

In fact, last weekend, I wore this strap with my D850 for three continuous hours, and aside from it being like 200 degrees out, I was perfectly comfortable. That's just not something I've ever experienced with a camera strap at this price point.

I love that the shoulder pad has an anti-slip surface, too, so it held position on my shoulder without feeling too tight.

FBBA144F 39F4 4371 9931 DE0D726EA271

I also appreciate the handy zippered pocket that's built right into the strap.

It's a great spot for keeping extra memory cards, or in my case, an extra battery (which I needed when shooting with my a6300).

You could even use it to carry a credit card and some cash, a thing of Tic-Tacs, or whatever other small items you might need when you're out shooting.

On top of all that, this thing comes with a three-year warranty, which is certainly a feature that you don't find with inexpensive photography gear.

61YVLwqDJrL. SL1000

In other words, I've found my HiiGuy camera strap to be functional and comfortable while also providing my camera a rock solid and secure attachment. And with the aforementioned warranty and a price that can't be beat, I think I've found the ideal combination of functionality, quality, and price!

Photography can be pricey, we all know that.

As a consequence, I constantly get questions from photographers about economical choices for gear.

As I noted earlier, more often than not, the budget-friendly route usually ends up in a huge letdown, but every once in awhile, you find that needle in a haystack, the photography gear that's both a good value and a great product. My HiiGuy camera strap is certainly one of those items!

5 Essential Photography Tips For Beginner Photographers

how to take better photosImage Credit: Victoria Labadie - Fotonomada via iStock

So, you're ready to become a photographer, eh? Congratulations!

Of course, making the decision to learn photography is one thing while actually putting forth the time and effort to do so is another.

It's easy to just pick up your camera and start shooting, but if you want to make real progress, you'll need to invest a little bit of time learning about the fundamentals of photography.

In this quick guide, I offer up a few must-have photography tips for beginners that cover everything from composition to photography gear to how to get a well-exposed photo.

Let's get to it!

Photography Composition Tip: Learn to Alter Your Perspective

One of the best ways that you can create more interesting and unique photos is by simply changing the eye level from which you shoot.

If you kneel down rather than stand, or if you climb a hill to gain some elevation on your subject, your images will immediately have a completely different look than what you'd get if you did what most people do and photograph the subject from a normal eye level.

You can see this concept at work by comparing the images above and below. The one above is from a traditional eye level. And while there's nothing wrong with this shot, it isn't exactly eye-catching, either.

beginner photography tipsImage Credit: pawel.gaul via iStock

In this shot, however, changing the perspective by shooting from an elevated position resulted in a more interesting image.

Furthermore, if you alter the angle from which you shoot - like shooting at a steep upward angle at the subject or a steep downward angle, the resulting image will be more eye-catching as well.

Another tip is to get close to the subject and fill the frame. Doing so allows you to highlight the details of the subject and gives the viewer a much more intimate view.

Beginner Photography Tip: Invest in Gear Essentials

One of the first things you need to do gear-wise is to replace the camera strap that came with your camera.

The problem with those straps is that they're flimsy and uncomfortable, and really do nothing for you except give you neck and shoulder pain.

Instead, upgrade your camera strap with something like the one shown above.

This particular strap from HiiGuy has a big, padded shoulder, which helps spread the weight of your camera and lens out over a larger area. That means less shoulder and neck fatigue for you! It also has an anti-slip silicone coating on it so your camera actually stays put on your shoulder.

What's more, a good camera strap like this offers functionality beyond comfort.

For example, it's universally compatible, so it will work perfectly with any DSLR with a standard 1/4" screw.

Additionally, the HiiGuy strap has a built-in zippered pocket, so you have a ready-made spot for things like extra camera batteries or memory cards right at your fingertips.

hiiguy camera strap 2

Add to that the fact that this strap is highly adjustable to fit just about any body type, is made of high-quality and durable materials, and comes with a three-year warranty, and you have the makings of an excellent investment.

Heck, you even get a free eBook of photography tips, a microfiber cleaning cloth, an SD card storage case, and more!

Perhaps best of all, this strap is extremely affordable, so you won't break the bank upgrading your gear. What's not to like about that?!

Learn How to Hold Your Camera

It might seem like a trivial thing, but how you hold your camera can actually impact how your images turn out.

If you hold the camera incorrectly - as demonstrated in the image above - you don't give it the most stable base for taking photos.

The problem with that is that the less stable your camera is, the less likely you are to get sharp photos.

Holding the camera correctly involves beefing up the stability by placing your left hand firmly under the camera body.

Combined with having a good grip on the camera with your right hand, this approach to holding a camera is much more stable.

You can even tuck your elbows into your chest, lean against a firm object like a wall, or support your elbows on a table or other horizontal surface for more stability.

Master Full Auto Mode - and Then Ditch It

photography tips for beginnersImage Credit: Bhanupong Asatamongkolchai via iStock

When you're just starting out in photography, learning how to take better photos involves learning how your compose your images.

And that is most simply done if you shoot in full auto mode. That's because in full auto, the camera handles all the technical stuff, so you can focus on learning how to compose a great shot.

But what full auto mode won't do for you is help you learn how your camera works...

To do that, and to learn about essential camera settings and controlling the exposure of your images, you need to learn how to manipulate exposure settings.

There are three exposure settings - aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Each is summarized in the graphic above.

In a nutshell, aperture controls the amount of light that enters your camera, shutter speed controls the duration of light, and ISO controls the sensitivity of your camera's sensor to light.

A change in any of these settings will make your images brighter or darker, depending on the change that's made.

A complete discussion of exposure settings is an article in and of itself (which you can read here).

It's a more advanced topic than just the basics, but trust me when I say that the sooner you learn how to control the exposure, the better off you'll be!

Cheap Camera Accessories You Should Never Leave Home Without

cheap camera accessoriesPhoto by DieterMeyrl via iStock

When you are on a budget or just getting started, stretching that hard-earned dollar as far as you can, can be the difference between not having enough photography gear and sliding on through...

Of course, you don't just want to slide by with the bare minimum, but you also don't want to spend a ton of money.

That's where this list comes in.

Below, I've outlined some of my favorite budget-friendly photography accessories. Whether you're a beginner, enthusiast, or a pro, this gear will work hard for you without busting your budget.

Cheap Camera Accessory: Filters

cheap photography accessories filter 1

If you're been in the photography game for any amount of time, you know that a lot of the best gear is also very expensive.

Good filters, by and large, can set you back hundreds of dollars. That's a big hit to your budget after buying a camera, a lens or two, a tripod, and other accessories.

You can save money without sacrificing quality by getting Kenko filters, though.

cheap photography accessories filter 2

Kenko has two must-have filters for your kit:

  • Kenko Nyumon Circular Polarizer - This filter helps reduce glare, improve contrast in the sky, and reduces atmospheric haze for improved landscape photos. Prices start at around $15.00.
  • Kenko Variable ND Filter - A neutral density filter blocks a certain degree of light from entering the lens, thus allowing you to use a much slower shutter speed when shooting in daytime conditions. This enables you to blur water, cloud movement, and so forth. Variable ND filters are circular and screw onto the lens, and are adjustable by turning the filter in its housing. This one filter is like having a whole set of ND filters in your bag. Prices start at around $240.00, which is a bargain when compared to other filter sets that are double or triple that price.

Cheap Camera Accessory: Camera Strap

One of the top accessories you need to buy to upgrade your kit is a better camera strap.

Though some straps cost hundreds of dollars, there are excellent budget options out there.

The HiiGuy Camera Strap is a great example of affordability and functionality.

It has a big, comfy shoulder pad to soften the weight of the load you're carrying. There's even a zippered compartment to keep your spare memory cards!

The strap is highly adjustable, too - I'm over six feet tall and I can adjust this strap perfectly, as can my wife, who's barely over five feet tall.

What's more, this strap is high-grade metal components, so it can support a great deal of weight. I used it to tote my Nikon D-850 with an L-bracket and a 70-200mm zoom lens attached around Boston last fall, and never once did I think the strap wasn't up to the task.

Better still, HiiGuy throws in some swag with the strap, including a microfiber cleaning cloth, a memory card case, an eBook, and a 3-year warranty.

Best of all, this strap retails for under $30!

Cheap Camera Accessory: Tripod

cheap camera accessory tripod 1

Tripods can be among the most expensive photography accessories - some are in excess of $1,500!

But when you're on a budget, that's simply out of the question, and a good, solid, affordable tripod is needed.

The Vanguard Espod CX 204AP fits the bill with loads of features at a great price.

cheap camera accessory tripod 2

This tripod weighs just 2.2 pounds, even with the included pan/tilt head attached. It folds down to 20.7-inches, so it's easy to pack away in your bag, too.

It's got 4-section legs that extend the tripod to a height of 61-inches, quick-flip leg locks that make deploying the tripod a quick task, and a central column anti-shock ring to dampen vibrations that cause blurry photos.

You get all that for about $71.50!

Cheap Camera Accessory: Editing Software

Okay, so editing software is probably something that will stay at home (but hey, bring your laptop and find some free WiFi and you can edit on the go!).

If you've looking into getting something like Photoshop or Lightroom, it can certainly be sticker shock.

Though many companies have moved to the monthly fee-based model, one that still offers its (really good) product for a one-time fee is Skylum.

Their Luminar 3 software has all the bells and whistles you could want in an editor, and then some.

The well-designed and intuitive UI is easy to use and puts all the controls you need to make beautiful edits right at your fingertips.

Luminar 3 has a library feature, so you can sort, organize, and rate your images quickly and easily. It also has presets (called "Looks," shown above) that apply a range of edits to your images automatically. They're a great way to get the editing process started.

Gif Sky Enhancer 3

Luminar 3 also uses AI to make editing simpler and easier. In fact, their Accent AI filter applies about a dozen edits to the photo, so you can literally drastically improve the quality of your images in mere seconds. The AI Sky Enhancer (shown above) brings contrast and definition to otherwise plain Jane skies.

It's software that's easy to use for beginners, yet has all the tools that veteran photographers need and want to edit their photos.

It's only $69, too, so of all the affordable photography accessories you can buy, Luminar 3 is one of the best-priced.

Cheap Camera Accessory: Lenses

cheap camera accessory lensesPhoto by yipengge via iStock

If there's anything you DON'T want to skimp on, it's the lenses you use.

Cheap lenses often produce cheap-looking results that aren't quite sharp, have ghosting, show vignetting, and so forth.

That means investing in the best glass you can afford is the way to go.

To save money, you can buy a better lens at a lower price by buying a used lens.

cheap camera accessory lenses 2

When buying used, where you get it is as important as what you're buying.

I use Lensfinder to buy and sell lenses, and it's been an awesome experience every time.

Lensfinder was built by photographers, for photographers, so the platform speaks to your specific needs.

You don't have to sift through all sorts of unrelated products like you do on eBay, and there's no scams like you often find on Craigslist.

Just enter the details of the lens you want (a 50mm f/1.8 is a great, inexpensive choice!), search the listings, find what you need, and proceed with buying it.

Everything is taken care of right on the Lensfinder platform, from product searches to communicating with sellers to leaving feedback.

And it's less expensive than paying all those eBay fees. Nice!

Cheap Camera Accessory: Cleaning Kit

cheap camera accessory cleaning kit

It's shocking how many photographers don't clean their camera and lenses on a regular basis.

It's not a task that needs to be done weekly, by any means, but every few months, for sure.

You can pick up a good cleaning kit on the cheap with all the tools you need.

Look for a kit like the one shown above that includes a cleaning pen, a lens brush, an air blower, and lens-cleaning cloths.

This one also includes three microfiber cloths and a refillable plastic spray bottle.

All that for $9!

Cheap Camera Accessory: Camera Bag

cheap camera accessory camera bag 1

Of course, you need something to carry all your new accessories in, and a good, solid backpack is a great choice.

Like any other photography gear, you want to get something that's well-made and durable, but without breaking the bank.

The Vanguard VEO 42 backpack is a comfortable bag to carry thanks to the heavily padded shoulder straps.

You can fit a ton of gear in this thing as well - a mirrorless camera with a lens attached, 1-2 additional lenses, spare batteries and memory cards, a flash, a tripod, and a 13-inch laptop, too.

cheap camera accessory camera bag 2

Vanguard has made it easy to get your gear out of the bag with a bottom access panel that makes swapping out your gear a quick task.

This bag is even convertible. Just remove the padded camera insert and you have a regular backpack that you can use for school books, clothes for a weekend trip, and so forth.

Best of all, this bag is just $49!

Cheap Camera Accessory: Camera

best cheap camera accessory camera 1

I know a camera isn't a camera accessory, but I still wanted to offer a recommendation for an inexpensive camera.

I've used the Sony Alpha a6300 for years now, and it has proven to be an excellent little camera.

It's mirrorless, so it's small and lightweight and easy to carry.

best cheap camera accessory camera 3

It's got a 24-megapixel sensor, an astounding 425-point autofocus system, and a water-resistant body.

Add to that a 2.36-million dot OLED viewfinder, 4K UHD video capabilities, WiFi, and NFC, and you have the makings of a highly capable little camera.

Brand new, these things go for about $750 for the body only, but if you buy used, you can pick one up in like-new condition for about $644 at MPB. That's not bad at all!

Essential Tips to Fix Your Bad Photography Experiences

beginner photography tipsImage Credit: vadimguzhva via iStock

When you're a beginner photographer - heck, when you're a veteran photographer for that matter - not everything goes smoothly.

There will be times when you mess up the camera settings, get the composition all wrong, and otherwise make the exact wrong choice for what you're trying to do.

Your bad photography experiences aren't just limited to those technical things, either. In fact, you can have a lousy photography experience because you're using the wrong lens or because you have a terrible camera strap.

In this quick guide, I offer up some lessons I've learned over the years that will help address these kinds of problems.

The result? A much-improved photography experience!

Learn Advanced Camera Modes

picture id92250115Image Credit: StockPhotosArt via iStock

Problem: Your photos have washed out highlights or featureless shadows

Solution: Take more control over the exposure settings

Shooting in full auto mode gives you the advantage of not having to think too much about the camera settings you're using.

The issue with that is that the camera tries to determine what the best settings are for the present conditions, and while it can do an okay job in some situations, it's not foolproof.

The key to having a better photography experience - and better photos as a result - is learning how to take more control over your camera.

You don't have to shoot in full manual mode to do that, either.

mutt dog playing with a stick picture id876312728Image Credit: Capuski via iStock

If you're taking a photo of a subject that's not moving, try using aperture priority mode.

This mode gives you control over the aperture and ISO setting while the camera determines a shutter speed for a well-exposed image.

This also enables you to select apertures that suit the situation. For example, you can select a very large aperture to minimize the depth of field for a portrait or select a small aperture to maximize the depth of field for a landscape shot.

Alternatively, if you're photographing a subject that's moving - say, your kid playing soccer - you can use shutter priority mode for improved shots.

By controlling the shutter speed and the ISO setting, you get to determine how the motion is captured while the camera determines the aperture.

For example, if you want to freeze the movement of your child as they go to kick the ball, you can dial in a fast shutter speed and the camera will select an aperture that matches it for a well-exposed image.

Something as simple as learning how to use these two camera modes can have a huge impact on your photography experiences!

Upgrade Your Camera Strap

20180821 0001 1

Problem: You don't shoot for very long because your neck and shoulders are fatigued

Solution: Get a better camera strap

The camera straps that come with cameras are just plain terrible.

They're flimsy. They're poorly constructed. They have no padding. They degrade over time. It's just a bad situation!

But the solution to this all-too-common problem is simple: get a better camera strap.

20180830 0079 1

Fortunately, you don't have to spend a ton of money to get a strap that's more comfortable, functional, and durable.

In fact, you can get a camera strap that ticks all those boxes for under $30.

The HiiGuy Camera Strap uses high-end materials that ensure you get a strap that's durable for the long-term.

That includes upgraded metal fittings that ensure a secure connection between the strap and the camera.

20180821 0045 1

Speaking of secure connections, the Hiiguy Camera Strap has a safety tether that acts as a fail-safe just in case the primary screw mount disengages.

What's more, the big, comfy shoulder pad has a silicone covering that helps it grip your shoulder, giving it a secure connection to your body that allows for a comfortable carrying experience.

But this strap isn't just about comfort...

Instead, there's tons of functionalities, too.

20180821 0005 1

The strap is highly adjustable, so no matter if you're shorter-than-average, taller-than-average, or someplace in between, this strap can accommodate your needs.

Another ingenious feature of this strap is the integrated zipper pocket on the shoulder pad.

It's a perfect size for keeping a spare battery or memory card. No more digging through your camera bag to find them!

Just imagine being able to take photos for hours and hours. That would be nice, right?

With the HiiGuy Camera Strap, you can do that in supreme comfort. Talk about a great way to fix your bad photography experiences!

Change Your Perspective to Change Your Photos

Problem: Your photos all look the same

Solution: Challenge yourself to shoot from varying angles

When you look at a bunch of photos you've taken, do they all look the same? Are they on the boring side?

If that's a problem you're dealing with, an easy solution is to find new angles to photograph the same subject.

bearded man picture id899854120Image Credit: South_agency via iStock

For example, most people take most of their photos from their eye-level.

That's all well and good, but that's how most of us see the world - from an eye-level perspective.

Instead of just standing there and snapping a photo, try kneeling down, sitting down, or even laying on the ground to alter the point of view of the shot. Doing so will give the subject more presence in the frame and make it seem larger than life.

cappella di vitaleta in tuscany italy picture id853738248Image Credit: mammuth via iStock

Conversely, try finding an elevated position like a hilltop or a balcony and shooting down towards the subject.

With a higher perspective, you can get a larger, grander view of the subject. Though the primary subject will occupy less of the frame, including its surroundings will provide context to the image that might help you tell a more compelling story.

And in the end, that's what photography is all about - telling stories.

If you can learn a few advanced camera settings to improve the quality of your photos, find a better camera strap so you can shoot longer and more often, and use compositional tricks like altering your perspective, there won't be anything stopping you from turning your bad photography experiences into full-blown successes!

Getting Started in Photography on a Budget

how to get started in photographyImage Credit: mixetto via iStock

If you haven't figured it out already, photography can be an expensive undertaking. Really expensive.

By the time you buy a camera and a couple of lenses, a good tripod and a set of lens filters, a camera strap and a camera bag, you could easily surpass $1,000. Heck, you could easily surpass $5,000 for all that gear!

However, if you go about it the right way and look for a good balance of quality and price, you can find great photography gear without needing to take out a second mortgage on your house to pay for it.

Here are a few of my recommendations for getting started in photography on a budget.

Editor's Note: Each of the products or services I recommend below are products or services that I have personally used, and my recommendations are based upon my positive experiences using each one.

HiiGuy Camera Strap

71ol2YCDXtL. SL1000

One of the most underrated pieces of photography gear is the camera strap.

Why? Well, I think the reason is twofold.

First, cameras come with a camera strap already, so most people just use it instead of looking for a new one.

Second, I don't think people realize just how bad factory camera straps really are.

717HtxqgRSL. SL1000

Replacing a strap can cost hundreds of dollars, though, so you need to look for a strap that offers better comfort, functionality, and durability while maintaining a low price.

That's where the HiiGuy Camera Strap comes in...

This strap has a nice large pad that helps distribute the weight of your camera onto a larger surface area on your shoulder.

The strap is highly adjustable, giving you the ability to customize how high or low you carry your camera in relation to your body.

Better still, the strap comes with a three-year warranty, so if something goes awry, you can rest assured that your purchase is guaranteed.

713Y9Bw5x6L. SL1000

But the best part of the HiiGuy Camera Strap is its value.

At less than $20, it's hard to beat the price of this strap.

That's especially considering that it comes with a host of goodies, including a microfiber lens cleaning cloth, a safety tether to ensure the security of your camera, and an eBook of photography tips to help you take better photos.

Now that's how to get started in photography on a budget!

Sirui A-1005 Tripod With Y-10 Ball Head

311ss4lQqrL

Another highly underrated piece of photography gear that you need in your camera bag is a solid tripod.

A tripod isn't just for stabilizing your camera...

Instead, using a tripod can actually help you compose more impressive photos.

Think about it - not only does a tripod stabilize your camera and keep camera shake at bay, but if you invest in a good tripod that has tons of functionality, you can frame up interesting low-angle shots that have more visual appeal.

41I7XoXJOuL

A great beginner tripod is the Sirui A-1005 shown above and below.

At less than $140, this tripod might seem expensive, but when you consider the value that a good tripod brings to the table, it more than pays for itself over the years.

That's especially true of this tripod, because not only is it a tripod, but it's also a monopod.

It also supports up to 22 pounds of gear, so even if you don't have a bunch of big, fancy equipment, this tripod can grow with you over the years as you add more gear to your collection.

41yZ1FWQpJL

What's more, shooting with a tripod helps you slow things down a little bit and pay attention to the details that make photos so great.

That is, rather than rushing your shots, you can take a moment to visualize the scene while you set up your tripod and figure out the direction you'd like to take your images.

Just taking that extra 10-15 seconds to really think about your composition can make all the difference in the quality of your photos!

Pre-Owned Camera from MPB

New cameras can cost thousands of dollars, and if you're a beginner photographer, you might not want to spend that kind of money.

Fortunately, there's services like MPB that have thousands of pre-owned cameras for sale, which means you can get a great camera for a great price.

The advantage of buying a pre-owned camera from MPB is that each item is thoroughly checked and graded, so you know when you look at the listing page exactly what you're getting and the condition that the item is in.

That includes "like new" cameras that might have a few thousand shutter clicks, but are otherwise indistinguishable from a brand new camera (apart from the price!).

sony a6000

For example, you can get a Sony Alpha a6000 - a camera that costs about $550 brand new - for about $350 from MPB.

As another example, you can get a Canon EOS Rebel T6i - one of the best beginner cameras on the market - starting at $454 from MPB, compared to a $599 price tag brand new.

In other words, you don't have to spend all your money on just a new camera.

Instead, if you shop smart and find great deals on used cameras, you'll have plenty of money left over to upgrade your tripod and camera strap, too!

How to Get Better at Photography

how beginners can get better at photographyImage Credit: Poike via iStock

It's an age-old question: "How do I get better at photography?"

Believe it or not, it's a much simpler answer than you might think.

When it comes down to it, learning how to get better at photography comes down to a few simple principles.

Below, I've outlined a few beginner photography tips that will help you learn new photography tricks, acquire the knowledge you need to compose better shots, and become a more confident shooter, too.

Let's get started!

Focus on Education

how to get better at photographyPhoto by JESHOOTS.COM on Unsplash

Learning how to become a better photographer obviously requires that you spend time behind the lens taking a lot of photos (more on that in a bit...).

But randomly taking a lot of photos won't do you much good if you don't also learn how to take photos in the first place.

That's why focusing on educating yourself about the ins and outs of photography is so important.

Now, I'm not saying that you need to rush over to the local university and sign up for every photography class they offer.

Instead, simply spending 10-15 minutes each day reading articles like this, exploring photography tutorials, and watching YouTube videos will help you gain the skills you need to improve.

That's what's so great about learning photography - there are thousands of free resources online that offer top-notch advice for beginner photographers.

Better still, as you advance in your knowledge and your skills grow, you can still find thousands of online resources that cater to more advanced photographers.

All it takes is a commitment to learn something new each day, and you'll be surprised at how quickly you become a better photographer.

Always Have Your Camera With You

hiiguy camera strap 3

The best thing you can do to become a better photographer is to simply have your camera with you at all times.

After all, the more photos you take, the more practice you get composing shots, learning camera settings, and so forth.

But it's not like you can carry your DSLR or mirrorless camera around in the office all day long...

That means you need to make it easier to grab your camera and go, whether that's taking it out on your lunch break or heading off for a weekend photography getaway.

hiiguy camera strap 1

One way that you can make it easier to have your camera at-the-ready at all times is to invest in a camera strap that offers comfort, convenience, and durability.

And while some people will say you need to spend a ton of money on a camera strap in order to get those features, I'm here to tell you that you don't!

In fact, I bought the HiiGuy camera strap shown above for less than $25, and it was a great investment.

For starters, the strap is incredibly comfortable with a big, cushy shoulder pad that distributes the weight of my camera over a large area.

When you're trying to go out and shoot more often, having that comfortable carrying experience will only encourage you to grab your camera and go shoot more often.

hiiguy camera strap 2

This strap also has ingenious features that make the process of taking photos easier...

There's a handy zippered pocket on the shoulder strap for storing extra batteries or memory cards.

The strap is also supremely adjustable, so whether you're a big, tall guy like over 6 feet tall or you're a little shorter in stature, you can adjust the camera strap such that your camera is exactly where you want it next to your body.

beginner photography tips

On top of all that, the HiiGuy camera strap utilizes high-performance materials that make carrying your camera a safer experience.

That's thanks to the grippy underside of the shoulder pad that keeps it in place on your shoulder and the durable metal hardware that safely and securely attaches the strap to your camera.

Even better, the HiiGuy camera strap comes with an eBook of photography tips, a microfiber cloth, an SD card case, and an industry-leading three-year warranty.

Having a good-quality camera strap is one of the most underrated things in photography. But if you're serious about making progress as a photographer, you need a camera strap that makes photography easier and more comfortable, and the HiiGuy camera strap will do just that!

Learn How to Use Your Gear

It seems like a no-brainer that your ability to take a quality photo rests in part on your ability to effectively use your camera and other gear.

Yet I know the first thing I do when I get a new camera or lens is immediately take it out to shoot.

When you're a beginner, you need to dial back your eagerness to start shooting and spend time actually learning how to use your gear.

I know that reading your camera's owner's manual isn't exactly a fun exercise, but trust me - the more you know about your camera, lenses, tripod, and other equipment, the more effectively you will be able to use it to capture good photos!

Change Things Up

I love landscape photography, so the vast majority of my photos are of landscapes.

But if I don't challenge myself from time to time and take portraits or shots of cityscapes and other subjects, I get into a creative rut.

When you're just starting out, there's nothing wrong with heavily concentrating on your favorite kind of photography.

But once you have your footing, try expanding your horizons. The challenge will help you apply what you've learned to completely different situations, build confidence, and hone your skills that much more.

And, like I said earlier, there are so many different articles, tutorials, and videos out there to help you continue to develop as a photographer, so commit yourself to learning, to always having your camera with you, to learning how to use your gear, and challenging yourself to try new things. If you can do that, you'll be well on your way to becoming a better photographer!

Is a High-Quality Camera Strap on a Budget Even Possible? You Might Be Surprised...

20180830 0022

I think we can all agree that photography can be a very pricey undertaking. That’s true whether you’re an amateur who takes pictures for fun or a professional that does it for a living.

That means that finding quality gear that doesn’t cost a ton of money is very important.

The problem with inexpensive gear is that it tends to be made poorly or it doesn’t last, or in the case of something like a camera strap, it’s incredibly uncomfortable.

However, I think I’ve found the Holy Grail of budget-friendly camera straps that manages to be comfortable, durable, and functional, all the while costing less than $25. That strap, my friends, is the HiiGuy Camera Strap

I’ve had my HiiGuy Camera Strap for about a month now, and I wanted to share a detailed, real-world review of this rig to demonstrate just how much strap you can get for about $25.

I Had Low Expectations of Quality

20180830 0036

Let’s call a spade a spade…

When I ordered my HiiGuy Camera Strap I didn’t have very high expectations. I don’t think anyone would blame me given the $25 price point.

But I have to say, as soon as I unboxed the strap, I was impressed. And now that I’ve had a chance to get out and shoot and actually use the strap, I’m even more impressed with the quality of construction.

20180830 0034

One of the things I look for when considering quality of construction is the stitching. In looking at other inexpensive camera straps, I’ve found that more often than not that the stitching either looks bad, is coming apart already, or both.

That’s not the case with HiiGuy.

In fact, the stitching on this strap looks like something you’d get with a much pricier strap. That indicates to me that these guys are committed to crafting a high-quality strap.

20180830 0048

What’s more, this strap’s metal components have been upgraded and give you the kind of performance you’d expect out of a much higher-priced strap.

In fact, I compare the metal clip that attaches the camera to the strap to clips I’ve seen on surfboards and parachutes. It’s simply a rock-solid connection between the strap and your camera.

The Comfort Level is Next Level

20180830 0008

Another surprising quality I discovered about the HiiGuy Camera Strap is just how comfortable it is to use.

That’s thanks to the large, padded shoulder pad that helps distribute the weight of the camera across the shoulder. In fact, the padding in this shoulder pad is comparable to other straps I’ve tested at much, much higher price points.

20180830 0040

Additionally, HiiGuy has incorporated a silicone anti-slip surface on the underside of the shoulder pad, which keeps the strap in place on your shoulder. That’s a nice touch for any strap, let alone one that’s less than $25.

And that comfort level isn’t fleeting, either. I tested this strap in New York City and Boston for hours on end, and found that even though I was carrying my Nikon D850 with a 70-200mm lens attached, I didn’t experience any shoulder fatigue. That’s thanks in part to the excellent shoulder pad, but is also due to the lightweight materials used to make this strap.

If that’s not a testament to the comfort of this strap, I don’t know what is!

Functionality is Off the Charts

20180830 0059

When I was field testing this strap, I put it through its paces in a variety of settings, from empty parks at night to busy streets in the middle of the day.

And no matter what situation I was shooting in, I found my HiiGuy Strap to be incredibly functional.

For starters, I appreciate the fact that there’s a safety tether that functions as a fail-safe, just in case the strap somehow detaches from the metal hook that attaches to the camera’s tripod mount.

20180830 0005

I also found that the strap’s shoulder pad stays in place when raising the camera to my eye for a shot.

Now, this might seem like a small detail that doesn’t matter, but in testing other budget-friendly straps, I noticed that the shoulder pad ended up on my back each time I raised my camera. That often meant having to reach back and pull the shoulder pad back into position.

With the HiiGuy Strap, though, the shoulder pad stays right where it should, so I spend less time adjusting the strap and more time actually shooting!

20180821 0057

Speaking of the shoulder pad, HiiGuy has integrated a small zippered pocket right into the pad. It’s great for keeping extra memory cards or a battery close at hand.

There’s an excellent range of motion with this strap as well. It’s highly adjustable, so whether you’re short or tall (like me), there’s plenty of latitude for customizing how low or high on your body that you carry your camera.

The Extras are Noteworthy

I’ve already covered the quality, comfort, and functionality of this strap, and normally that’s where the review would end.

However, with HiiGuy, you don’t just get a great strap, you also get a ton of extras added to the pot.

That includes a memory card carrying case, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and an eBook of essential photography tips.

On top of all that, this strap comes with a three-year warranty, which as far as I know is unheard of at this price point (and at many higher price points, too).

In other words, this strap is not only surprisingly well-made, comfortable, and functional, but it truly is a great all-in-one package for photographers. That’s why it’s one of my top 10 camera straps of 2018!

Must-Have Beginner Photography Gear

Must Have Beginner Photography Gear

If you’re just getting started in photography, you might be suffering a bit from sticker shock…

Cameras, lenses, tripods, filters, camera straps, and other photography gear can be extremely expensive. In fact, pros can easily spend tens of thousands of dollars on gear.

Since most of us don’t have that kind of money laying around, here’s a short list of must-have beginner photography gear that won’t break the bank, but won’t sacrifice performance, either.

A High-Performance, Affordable Camera Strap

hiiguy 1

Believe it or not, there are camera straps out there that cost hundreds of dollars.

But when you’re a beginner photographer, you don’t need to spend that kind of cash to get a top-quality camera strap.

I’ve been testing the HiiGuy Camera Strap for a few months now, and my initial impressions - that this was a well-made, well-designed, and comfortable strap - still remain today.

hiiguy 2

I use this strap to carry around my big and heavy Nikon D850 with a 24-70 lens and an L-bracket attached, and I’ve never once felt like the HiiGuy Camera Strap wasn’t up to the task.

Upgrade your camera strap today for less than $30

The construction of the strap is top-notch, with upgraded metal components that ensure your camera stays attached. There’s even dual attachment points - the primary clip and a safety tether - that way if one should fail, there’s a backup in place.

hiiguy 3

This strap is comfortable too. Like I said, I use it to tote around my big full frame DSLR, and I don’t experience any shoulder or neck fatigue thanks to the big, padded shoulder pad.

The shoulder pad even has a grippy underside so I don’t have to constantly adjust the strap on my shoulder. It also features a handy zippered pocket that’s ideal for keeping a spare memory card.

hiiguy 4

This strap is highly adjustable, so as a big dude, it allows me to carry my camera exactly where I want on my body. My wife - who’s about a foot shorter than me - can do the same.

Best of all, this strap is less than $30, so you don’t have to break the bank to get a strap that’s comfortable, functional, and provides your camera with the security it needs.

Must-Have Beginner Photography Gear: An Easy-to-Use Photo Editor

luminar easy to use photo editor

When you're just starting out in photography, one of the things that can overwhelm you the most is trying to learn how to edit your photos.

Smartphone apps have made the process of editing a little easier, with pre-made filters and easy-to-use controls. The problem, of course, is that these apps often lack the power and tools that full-blown editors boast.

Now, though, there's a photo editor that combines powerful features with an intuitive UI and tools that are simple to understand and use, even if you're a brand-new photographer. That editor is Luminar 3.

luminar looks

There are several things that set Luminar apart from the competition.

First, there are dozens of "Looks" that add style to your images or correct common problems instantaneously.

Start making beautiful edits of your photos today.

You can adjust the amount of the Look by manipulating a slider (sliders are also used to adjust filters, as shown below), so you still have control over how the Look changes your image, but in a way that's super streamlined.

These Looks are a perfect starting point for your editing process, and as you hone your post-processing skills, you can even create and save your own Looks!

luminar 3 filters

Another feature of Luminar that's of great benefit to beginner photographers is that you can make precise adjustments without making selections.

If you've ever watched a post-processing tutorial on YouTube, you know that making selections can be a very time-intensive task.

But with Luminar, there's no need to make selections when you use one of the image aware filters that are available to you.

 image

For example, if you want to give the sky in a landscape image more pop, you can use the AI Sky Enhancer, which uses artificial intelligence to analyze the image, masks everything but the sky, and applies the effects of the filter to give the sky more color, contrast, and definition.

And, just like with the Looks discussed earlier, you can fine-tune how the AI Sky Enhancer is applied by adjusting a single slider (as shown above).

There are other image aware filters, too - one to enhance foliage, one to enhance details and sharpness, one to precisely adjust tonal contrast, and another to selectively enhance cool and warm tones in an image.

These filters can help you create gorgeously rich photos and without spending a ton of time doing so. It's a win-win!

Luminar UI 03 1

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the value that Luminar 3 brings to the table.

Where you have to pay a recurring fee to use other photo editors, Luminar is $69. That's a one-time fee for lifetime access.

When you have to pay for a camera, lenses, filters, a tripod, a camera bag, and other necessities, it's nice to be able to get a powerful, feature-rich photo editor without spending an arm and a leg.

A Budget-Friendly Zoom Lens

Must Have Beginner Photography Gear A Budget Friendly Zoom Lens

Photo by Sami Boudjelti on Unsplash

When you bought your first camera, chances are that it came with a modest zoom lens, likely something along the lines of an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6.

And while kit zoom lenses have their merits as a beginner’s learning tool, they aren’t the best lenses in the world.

Get a better lens without breaking the bank

For sharper photos with less aberrations, consider upgrading to a better zoom lens.

Again, you don’t have to spend a mountain of money to get a lens that will perform better for you than your current kit zoom. In fact, there’s quite a selection of budget-friendly zoom lenses from which to choose.

In the video above, Art of the Image outlines three excellent zoom lenses for Canon crop sensor cameras that are worthy of consideration:

The beauty of the lenses listed above is that they offer improved performance over a standard kit lens. For example, if you like to photograph landscapes, the EF-S 10-18mm lens allows you to capture more of the scene with its much shorter focal lengths.

 lensfinder 1

Alternatively, the EF-S 18-135mm and EF-S 55-250mm lenses allow you to photograph all sorts of subjects due to their huge focal range.

In fact, with the 18-135mm option, you can photograph wide landscapes, intimate portraits, distant subject like wildlife, and just about anything in between.

Better still, even though these lenses are all budget-friendly brand-new, if you can find a used version, you can save even more money.

 lensfinder

I have bought numerous pre-owned lenses on Lensfinder over the last few months, and it’s been a great experience every time. Same goes for selling old lenses I no longer need!

The beauty of Lensfinder is that it was built by photographers, for photographers, so you don’t have to deal with hunting through dozens of unrelated items like you do on eBay or worry about scams like you do on Craigslist.

Instead, you just enter your search terms, find what you need, buy and pay for it right on Lensfinder, and await your purchase to arrive. You can even communicate with the seller and leave feedback, and with fraud protections in place, you can have peace of mind too. What’s not to like about that?

If You Shoot Landscapes, You Need a Polarizing Filter

If You Shoot Landscapes You Need a Polarizing Filter

Having lens filters enables you to improve the quality of your photos in-camera, which means less time trying to fix things in post-processing and more time actually out shooting.

For beginner landscape photographers, one of the best filters you can invest in is a polarizing filter.

Polarizers offer a whole host of benefits:

  • They reduce glare off non-metallic objects (like water), which reduces distractions and enhances your ability to create an eye-catching shot.
  • Polarizers boost the contrast in the sky, making the blue color of the atmosphere deeper and more dramatic while enhancing the bright white of the clouds.
  • These filters also reduce atmospheric haze, so distant landscape features appear more clearly in the shot.

In other words, a polarizer is a sort of one-stop shop for improving the quality of your landscape photos.

And while some polarizing filters are well over $100, Kenko Circular Polarizers are super budget-friendly.

Depending on the size of the filter you need, you’ll spend between $15.00 and $50.00 for a high-quality filter.

 kenko 1

Kenko utilizes precision-polished Asahi Japanese optical glass in these filters, so you’re assured of crystal clear results.

The low-profile slim housing is a benefit too, as it help prevent vignetting, even when used with a wide-angle lens.

 kenko 2

There’s a reason why these filters are the best-selling lens filters in Japan!

For quality and performance, Kenko is tough to beat at this price point, as are the other products reviewed above.

The moral of the story is that you don’t need to spend all your money on expensive gear to get better results. Give these budget-friendly items a try, and you’ll see what I mean!

Practical Tips for Beginner Photographers

When you're a beginner photographer, it can be a little overwhelming sifting through the many thousands of photography tutorials that can be found online.

On top of that, many photography tutorials focus on complex topics that might overwhelm you even further.

If you're simply looking for a few practical photography tips to help you get started, though, this is the place!

From tips on gear selection to advice on how to find your creativity and points in between, this list is a great spot to begin your photography journey.

Get Inspired

Before you even take a single photo, it can help to peruse photos that other people have taken.

From learning about little-known places near you to photograph to figuring out what kind of photography you most appreciate, a quick scan through Instagram, the PhotographyTalk galleries, or websites like Flickr can unleash all sorts of inspiration.

But don't just look at photos for a split second before moving on - instead, really think about why the photo caught your eye. Was it the subject? The lighting? The colors?

Do the same for photos that you don't like, too. Part of becoming a better photographer is figuring out what works and what doesn't, and giving a quick inspection of other people's photos is a great way to do that.

Invest in High-Quality Gear

20180821 0015 min

You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on fancy photography gear to take great photos. But upgrading the gear you have with better stuff certainly doesn't hurt!

One photography accessory that I see many, many beginner photographers neglect is their shoulder strap.

Sure, your camera likely came with a cheap, flimsy strap, but that's not how you want to carry your camera gear, especially on long days of shooting.

Instead, you can upgrade your strap without spending much money by investing in a HiiGuy Camera Strap.

hiiguy2

I'll be honest - when I ordered my strap from HiiGuy, I wasn't expecting much because of the under-$30 price point.

But man, was I surprised when I opened the package and saw what this strap has to offer.

Aside from being extremely comfortable thanks to its big, soft shoulder pad, the craftsmanship of this strap is excellent.

The stitching is beautiful, the materials are durable, and you can just tell that there was a lot of pride put into the strap.

hiiguy 1

What's more, the HiiGuy camera strap is incredibly functional.

The silicone coating on the shoulder pad prevents it from sliding around while the metal connectors ensure a safe and reliable connection between the strap and your camera.

There's a built-in pocket on the shoulder pad, which is handy for storing memory cards and spare batteries, while the highly adjustable length of the strap allows photographers of all sizes to use it.

It's simply a great investment and provides top functionality - much more so than the factory camera strap that came with your camera!

Don't Just Focus on the Technical Things

As I mentioned earlier, looking at photos that other people have taken can help you get started in photography on the right foot.

But aside from finding inspiration from what other people have done, examining photos that you like can also help you develop your eye for the artistic side of photography.

That is, making a great photo isn't just about technical precision like dialing in the right camera settings. Instead, you also need to understand the fundamentals of things like composition to create the best images.

So, doing things like learning how to use leading lines in a landscape photo and how to apply the rule of thirds to portraits is just as essential as learning how to shoot in manual mode and developing an understanding of white balance.

In the end, a beautiful photo is created because of your ability to do all those things (and many more!).

Secrets for Improved Travel Photography

travel photography gear tips

Travel photography is one of the most exciting types of photography because not only do you get a chance to take a lot of different types of photos, but you also get to do so in fantastic locations around the globe.

Really, what could be better?!

Of course, creating the best travel photos requires a lot more work than what it might seem in famous travel photographers’ Instagram posts.

That is, you can’t just show up at a location and press the shutter button…

Instead, you need to plan and prepare, and with these quick travel photography tips, you can do just that!

Travel Photography Tip: You Don’t Need the Kitchen Sink

travel photography gear tips

I know when I pack for a trip, my first inclination is to cram everything I can into my camera bag.

And though the thoughts of “what if” can be hard to put aside, you need to focus, pare down your kit, and only bring the bare minimum.

This is important because as you travel, the last thing you want to do is lug around a big, heavy bag. The less gear you bring, the less weight you have to carry and the smaller your bag can be.

What’s more, the more gear you bring, the more gear you have to be lost or stolen, so bringing a smaller kit is also a means of minimizing your loss should something happen.

I recommend bringing one camera body (mirrorless, if possible, to save weight), a solid prime like a 35mm, and a couple of zooms like a 24-70mm and a 70-200mm.

Of course, bring along lots of memory cards, a small tripod, spare batteries, and other necessities, too, like a good portable backup device (more on that below).

With that kind of kit, there’s really no subject that you can’t photograph. You’ll have the focal range for everything from landscapes to wildlife, portraits to architecture, and everything in between.

Best Camera Strap for Travel Photography

When planning a travel photography adventure, many people focus a lot of their attention on getting the ideal camera bag.

And while a good bag is a must for travel photography, I think a good camera strap is just as important.

While your bag needs to protect your gear as you travel, your camera strap needs to protect your camera while you’re shooting.

Not only that, your strap should make the act of shooting an easier, more functional, and more comfortable process as well.

hiiguy 1

A few months ago, I bought a HiiGuy Camera Strap off of Amazon for less than $30. I bought it because I wanted to test an inexpensive camera strap to see how it stood up to my more expensive ones.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised!

In fact, the next trip I take, my Nikon D850 will be attached to my HiiGuy strap - it’s that good!

hiiguy 2

Not only is this strap comfortable thanks to its large shoulder pad, but it’s highly adjustable too. That means I have an easier time fine-tuning how my camera hangs on my body to maximize my comfort level.

Upgrade your strap today for a more comfortable carrying experience

Additionally, the strap has an integrated pocket on the shoulder pad, which is perfect for carrying a couple of extra memory cards - something you’ll need quick access to as you travel and take tons of photos.

hiiguy 3

When you travel, you want a strap that provides the ultimate protection for your gear, and HiiGuy certainly delivers on that front.

The strap attaches to the camera in two different ways - via an anchor screw on the bottom of the camera and then again via a security strap that works as a fail-safe should the anchor become detached.

hiiguy4

These components are made of high-quality metal so they’re strong and give you the confidence you need to carry your expensive gear.

I toted my D850 with an L-bracket and a 70-200mm lens around Boston a couple of months ago with my HiiGuy strap and it worked beautifully, even with that big, heavy rig. I simply can’t recommend this thing highly enough for your next photography adventure!

Top Portable Backup Device for Travel Photography

hyperdrive 1

When you're on-the-go, you don't want to drag around a huge NAS to backup all your photos and videos. Instead, you want something small that packs a mighty punch.

The HyperDrive Colorspace UDMA3 fits the bill perfectly.

This portable storage and backup device comes in two sizes - 1TB and 500GB. Since I'm taking more and more videos when I travel, I opted for the 1TB version.

hyperdrive 2

This thing has been rock solid and has worked flawlessly since I picked it up, so in addition to being uber portable (it weighs just about a pound), it offers reliable performance too.

It has WiFi and supports both Ad Hoc and Infra modes. You can wirelessly share your files and synchronize data with another hard drive if you need. You can replace and install a traditional HDD or an SSD if you prefer as well.

hyperdrive 3

It also has a memory card slot that accommodates CompactFlash Type I and has two SDXC slots as well. Add in a USB 2.0 port, and you have tons of options for saving and connecting to other devices.

In other words, this little rig is the ideal travel companion. You can organize, edit, and sync your images, browse and share files, and even recover accidentally deleted files with this backup device. Not bad, right?!

Write Things Down About Your Travels

Part of what makes travel photos so compelling is the story that goes with the images.

That means that as you travel around taking photos, take a few moments to jot down some notes about what you’re photographing.

The more backstory or history you can provide about the people, places, and things you photograph - as well as your experience being there - the more engaging your photos will become.

The One Photography Accessory You MUST Upgrade in 2019

you need a better camera strap

When you think about all the gear that's required for photography, it's actually a little overwhelming.

Sure, you can take great photos with nothing but your smartphone, but for many of us, a camera body, a few lenses, a tripod, a ball head, a camera bag, and a camera strap are must-haves. And that's just a partial list!

If your photography kit needs some upgrading in the new year, it can be tough to decide what should be upgraded first.

I have pretty strong opinions about which photography accessory should be upgraded first...

You Need a Better Camera Strap

best camera strapPhoto by Miss Zhang on Unsplash

To be frank, if you're still using the strap that came with your camera, you're not doing yourself any favors.

Regardless of whether you have a Canon, Nikon, Sony, or another brand, the strap that came with your camera is most likely thin, flimsy, and straight-up uncomfortable. These are not qualities you want in your camera gear!

What's perplexing to me is that so many photographers put up with these straps.

Where someone wouldn't dare skimp on their lens, they'll use the world's worst camera strap for years and years without blinking an eye. It just doesn't make sense.

top camera straps 1Photo by Anete Lūsiņa on Unsplash

There was a time when I was counted amongst the many photographers that put up with the factory camera strap.

But years ago, I finally realized that if I had a more comfortable camera strap, I'd be inclined to shoot for longer periods of time.

I've tried a variety of straps over the years - some pretty great ones, some so-so ones, and some that were just plain terrible.

But even the terrible aftermarket straps I used were still better than the ones that came with my cameras.

The question is, what sort of camera strap should you get?

A Great Camera Strap Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

For some photographers, the price indicates the quality of the accessory they're buying.

And while price and quality sometimes go hand-in-hand, that's not always the case.

That means that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a really good camera strap that's comfortable and functional.

My HiiGuy camera strap is a perfect example.

20180821 0012 1

I paid less than $30.00 for this strap, and it was the best money I've spent in quite some time.

From a comfort standpoint, my HiiGuy camera strap goes toe-to-toe with other much more expensive straps I've used in the past. That's thanks to a large shoulder pad that helps distribute the weight of my camera over a larger area, which helps keep shoulder and neck fatigue at bay.

What's more, the shoulder pad has a grippy underside so it actually stays in place on your shoulder as you work. No more constant adjustments to keep it in place!

must have photography accessories

This strap is also highly adjustable - which is great for me because I'm a pretty tall guy.

With all that adjustability, I can tailor the strap to keep my camera at just the right spot on my body. And when my wife borrows my camera, she can do the same, even though she's about a foot shorter than me.

hiiguy camera strap

And regardless of which one of us is using this strap, we both appreciate it's safety features that keeps our cameras safe and sound.

The screw mount that fits into the tripod hold on the bottom of the camera is made of high-grade metal so you're sure to have a strong connection between the strap and your camera.

Additionally, there's a safety wire that provides a second, separate connection between the strap and your camera for additional protection.

That's good peace of mind to have when I'm walking around with my Nikon D850 with an L-bracket and a 70-200mm lens attached!

And despite this strap's small price tag, it offers tons of innovative features that I certainly appreciate.

There's a handy zippered pocket on the shoulder pad where I keep a couple of extra memory cards.

The mounting plate for the bottom of the camera has a rubber padding on it to prevent scratches on the camera.

Another nice feature is that it comes with a three-year guarantee. That's not something you find on many products these days, especially one at this price point!

Top 10 Camera Straps of 2018

best camera straps of 2018Image Credit: lechatnoir iStock

I don't think anyone will argue with the sentiment that the camera straps that come with cameras are not good.

In fact, I'd say that most factory camera straps are downright terrible.

They aren't comfortable. They certainly aren't good-looking. And they're easy for would-be thieves to cut and take off with your prized gear.

With all that in mind, making an investment in an aftermarket camera strap makes perfect sense.

The question is, which camera strap is right for you?

Here's our list of the top 10 camera straps of 2018 to help you make a decision.

Leather Camera Straps

There's nothing quite like the comfort and durability of leather. These camera straps capitalize on that to deliver the utmost in camera carrying experiences.

Holdfast MoneyMaker

1494434496000 1335144

What landed the Holdfast MoneyMaker at the top of our leather camera strap list is twofold: quality and features.

To say that this thing is built well is the understatement of the century...

The first time I laid hands on a Holdfast MoneyMaker, I was completely speechless - it's that impressive.

But it's not just about looks for the MoneyMaker.

1494434972000 IMG 796840

The leather construction means this thing is durable and comfortable.

My MoneyMaker has molded to my body over time, so it's even more comfortable years later than it was when I got it!

What's more, the bridle leather of my particular MoneyMaker has withstood all sorts of photography adventures, and it still looks like a million bucks.

Of course, with this harness system, you can carry two cameras with lenses attached, and with an additional camera leash, you can carry a third camera with lens attached.

1494434972000 IMG 796841

On top of that, you can also carry a number of Holdfast's camera bags with the MoneyMaker, so it becomes a complete camera carrying system.

In other words, this is the ideal camera strap for photographers that need to have tons of gear on their person (i.e., wedding photographers).

By having two or three cameras at your fingertips, you can minimize lens changes and maximize the time you spend actually taking photos!

Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo

D810 180701 0070 1024x1024

There was just one problem with the original Holdfast MoneyMaker - it was designed for carrying multiple cameras.

Not all of us need that capability, which is why the Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo is a great choice for shooters that want a luxury strap but typically don't shoot with multiple cameras.

Just like its big brother, the Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo was designed with both form and function in mind.

Using the same leathers and hardware, the Solo looks every bit as swanky as the original, but in a smaller package.

D810 180701 0071 1024x1024

The key to the Solo's success is the stabilizer strap that wraps around your side to keep the Solo in place on your shoulder.

Combined with the big, soft, contoured shoulder strap, you have a system that offers both incredible comfort while carrying your gear and supreme functionality.

The Solo stays put on your shoulder, right where you want it to be, and your camera stays put at your side, out of the way yet right at your fingertips when you need it.

The Holdfast Belt Anchor makes that possible because it locks your camera to your belt. Then, to use it, simply pull the release tab and bring your camera to your eye to take a shot.

D810 180701 0077 1024x1024

Better still, you can use the Solo to carry additional gear, just like you can with the original MoneyMaker.

Carry a Holdfast Cell Phone Pouch or add a Holdfast Lens pouch to increase the versatility of this beautiful and functional camera strap!

Budget Camera Straps

On a budget but still want a high-quality strap? Look no further...

HiiGuy Camera Strap

71ol2YCDXtL. SL1000

What's great about the HiiGuy camera strap is that you get a whole lot of bang for your buck.

That is, where other budget-friendly camera straps might be flimsy or poorly made, neither of those things are true of this well-built strap.

HiiGuy went through the trouble of investing in better-quality materials, that way they could provide you with a great strap that will be durable over the years but that's still budget-friendly.

61kqwsIGUBL. SL1000

Consider as well that this highly-adjustable strap is perfect for just about any photographer, whether you're short or tall or whether you shoot with a big DSLR or a small mirrorless camera.

The large shoulder pad has tons of padding to help distribute the weight of your gear over a larger area, thereby making it possible for you to go out and shoot for longer periods of time with less fatigue.

And since the strap's mount plate is also padded, you can rest assured that your HiiGuy camera strap won't scratch or damage your camera.

This thing even comes with a three-year warranty and a host of other goodies like a SD/Micro SD Case, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and an eBook of photography tips!

BlackRapid Curve Breathe

blackrapid

Not only is the BlackRapid Curve Breathe camera strap a great budget-friendly buy, but it's also one of the most comfortable straps on the market today.

As you can see above, the large shoulder pad increases the area of your body that bears the weight of your gear. And since that surface area is so large, you can shoot longer and in greater comfort.

The shoulder pad also has moisture-wicking properties, that way you're less likely to get all sweaty when you're working hard to get the shot.

91zJAHzazDL. SL1500

Beyond that, the Stabilizing Strap that comes with this camera strap helps ensure that your camera stays put on your shoulder, right where you want it.

This strap is designed to be worn across a right-handed shooter's body, so it drapes toward the right hip where the camera rests.

When carrying a camera with this strap, the camera rests upside down, that way there's less of a chance that you accidentally bang your lens against something as you walk.

Add in brass and zinc alloy hardware, and you have a winning combination for a budget-friendly strap!

Peak Design Slide Lite

61NazAaew5L. SL1000

Not all camera straps are ideally suited for a mirrorless camera, but the Peak Design Slide Lite sure is...

The Slide Lite is an incredibly versatile strap that can be worn as a sling, a neck strap, or a shoulder strap.

It's got dual quick adjusters that give you easy reconfiguration possibilities and that allow you to refine how you carry your gear.

51NXCeFTr2L. SL1000

Additionally, the Slide Lite has a silicone-coated grip that keeps the strap securely in place when using it as a shoulder strap.

The anchor connectors and hardware on this strap are both low profile, that way you can protect against snags.

Speaking of the anchor connectors, they're smaller and faster than on other Peak Design rigs, so you get high performance while also enjoying a leaner, meaner strap!

Op/Tech USA Utility Strap-Sling

81iBrN0gLUL. SL1200

For a low price, you sure do get a lot out of the Op/Tech USA Utility Strap-Sling.

First of all, the thick neoprene padding is a dream for carrying your gear for long periods of time.

Secondly, the strap connects with loops to the side of your camera, meaning that your tripod socket is free. Not all straps can claim that!

61RpqT1b1LL. SL1200

What's more, Op/Tech's "Uni loop" connectors make it a breeze to connect the strap to your camera.

They feel strong and secure, and require you to squeeze on both sides to get them to release, so you don't have to worry about theft or inadvertent releases.

The contoured shoulder pad offers tons of surface area for distributing weight, and its non-skid surface keeps the strap solidly in place on your shoulder.

It's not a bad combination of features, to say the least!

JOBY UltraFit Sling Strap

71Qwh3U HL. SL1000

Yet another excellent budget option is the JOBY UltraFit Sling Strap.

With sizes that range from small to XXL and models specifically for men and women, this strap offers more versatility than most at this price point.

For use with mirrorless cameras or DSLRs, the UltraFit Sling Strap has layered pad technology to enhance the comfort experience.

Additionally, there's an ergonomically placed pivot ring that allows the strap to conform to your body for even more comfort.

51qdUec46xL. SL1000

What's more JOBY has ensured that you have hands-free stability because this strap secures your camera close to your body.

With your camera at your fingertips, you'll be ready to take a photo in mere moments, yet when you don't need your camera, it's out of the way.

It's a simple strap, but one that's highly functional and gets high marks for its comfort. What more could you want?!

One thing I can’t stand is an ugly portrait backdrop. Another thing I can’t stand are backdrops that are flimsy, hard to clean, or simply don’t hang well.

And I’m not alone…

Sure, the background of a portrait isn’t the star of the show, but that doesn’t mean that photographers want to make-do with sub-optimal backdrops.

That’s where Click Props Backdrops comes in…

Click Props Backdrops has dedicated themselves to creating not just a HUGE collection of backdrops, floorgrounds, and combo sets, but they’ve also managed to create products that tick all the boxes when it comes to beauty, quality, ease of use, care, and price.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Mike's Camera

39f47350 a984 012e 877c 20cf30bab63e

If you have a Nikon shooter on your holiday shopping list, an ideal gift for them is the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens.

Why is it an ideal gift?

That's easy...it's incredibly versatile.

From wide-angle to telephoto, this lens does it all! It has a 10.7x zoom range, a close focus range of just 18 inches (at any focal length!), and VR II image stabilization that gives photographers up to 4 shutter speeds of leeway when shooting handheld.

All that translates into this being a powerhouse lens that will help your favorite photographer take better, sharper photos and videos.

The lens is optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness with two extra-low dispersion elements that also offer superb color correction with minimal chromatic aberrations.

Likewise, the three aspherical lens elements eliminate coma and other aberrations, even when shooting at wide apertures.

This lens is one of the most versatile and reliable lenses that Nikon makes. That's why it's a perfect gift idea for the photographer in your life!

DJI Mavic 2 Pro/Mavic 2 Zoom

dji mavic2 pro 0

DJI has been at the forefront of drone innovation for years now, but they’ve taken it up another notch with their latest drones, the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom. That’s good news if you’re looking for an incredible, cutting-edge gift for the photographer on your holiday list.

Though these drones share the same heritage and the same name, they actually have very different purposes - and some interesting features that set them apart from one another.

dji mavic2 pro 1

In the case of the Mavic 2 Pro, it’s armed with a one-inch 20MP CMOS sensor that’s housed in a Hasselblad camera - the same camera that’s found in DJI’s Phantom 4 Pro. The lens opens to f/2.8 and closes down to f/11, giving photographers and videographers excellent range for manipulating depth of field and shooting in low-light situations.

dji mavic2 pro 4

The Mavic 2 Zoom is geared more towards photographers and videographers that need a little bit more range with their drone’s lens. That’s why it’s outfitted with a 24-48mm lens paired with a 1/2.3-inch sensor that creates 12MP images.

But just because the Mavic 2 Zoom has a smaller sensor doesn’t mean that its photos and videos are somehow low-quality. In fact, both the Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro shoot 4K video at up to 100MB per second, and the Mavic 2 Zoom has a “super resolution mode” that allows photographers to stitch nine individual images together to create a single 48-megapixel behemoth.

Both drones can fly at a maximum speed of 44mph, have a maximum flight time of 31 minutes, and have DJI’s latest obstacle avoidance system that’s armed with 10 sensors.

In other words, DJI has stepped up its game and created two incredible, versatile drones that make ideal holiday gift ideas for photographers, videographers, and drone enthusiasts.

If you really need to impress the photographer in your life with a great gift and they're a Nikon shooter, a new Nikon Z7 should get you in their good graces.

This camera is, in a word, incredible...

Just check out these specs:

  • Backside-illuminated 45.7-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor

  • OLED electronic viewfinder with 3.69 million dots and 0.80x magnification

If you aren't familiar with camera speak, let me translate: this camera is awesome!

One of the best features of this camera is its sensor.

I shoot with a Nikon D850, and its sensor is widely considered the best ever made. The Nikon Z7's sensor is every bit as good.

Likewise, the Z7 has a fantastic autofocus system with 493 AF points. That makes this a perfect gift idea for photographers that work in sports, wildlife, and other venues in which capturing action is a must.

Additionally, the Z7 is lightweight, so if you've ever heard the photographer on your holiday list complain about carrying around a big, heavy DSLR, the Z7 is a great choice.

Not only that, but this camera has superb video functionalities with 4K video recording. Nikon even has a spate of new lenses to go with the Z7, though there's also an adapter that allows photographers to use their old Nikon lenses with the Z7, too.

Like I said before, if you want to impress your loved one this year, a Nikon Z7 is a great choice!

SIRUI SR-3204 Tripod

I've used SIRUI tripods for a long time now, and to say that I've been supremely happy with them is an understatement.

But now I have one of SIRUI's newest tripods - the SR-3204 - and it's even better than I thought possible.

A big part of what's so great about this tripod is that it has jaw-dropping statistics.

It holds up to 55 pounds of gear and can reach a maximum height of 80 inches with the optional two-stage center column.

Additionally, SIRUI has implemented excellent twist-lock leg mechanisms that make it quick and easy to set the tripod up and tear it down when you're done shooting.

Helping in the ease-of-use department is the fact that these tripods have three-position leg angles, so you can position the tripod just right to get the shots you want.

Add in the fact that there's an integrated bubble level, a removable flat top plate for converting the tripod from still photography to videography usage, and a 1/4-inch socket on the spider for attaching accessories, and you have the perfect tripod for the photography enthusiast on your holiday shopping list!

It's got all the features, versatility, and durability that your favorite photographer could possibly want.

Vallerret Photography Gloves

Whether the person on your holiday shopping list lives in the American Southwest, the Arctic Tundra, or somewhere in between, a pair of warm, functional photography gloves is an ideal last-minute gift.

If you’ve ever tried to operate your camera with traditional gloves on, you know that you just end up taking your glove off because you can’t press the buttons, let alone operate a touch-enabled screen on your camera or smartphone.

But Vallerret Photography Gloves solves that problem with gloves that have magnetic FlipTech finger covers on the thumb and pointer finger, as shown on the Women’s Nordic Glove shown above.

That means that instead of your favorite photographer freezing their hands off, they can keep their hands nice and toasty while still having the ability to get the job done with their camera.

Better still, Vallerret has a wide variety of gloves for men and women, as well as for different climate needs from light winter to mild winter to deep winter.

If you’re shopping for someone that lives in a temperate climate, the Vallerret Primaloft/Merino liner is a perfect gift idea.

This glove is supremely soft and warm and can be used as a standalone glove on mild days or as a base layer under any of Vallerret’s other gloves allowing you to layer up and adapt to the conditions. It’s even got conductive suede on the index fingers and thumbs that allows for using touch screens without removing the gloves.

If you’re shopping for someone that has more hard-core needs, Vallerret’s Skadi Zipper Mitt.

This versatile two-in-one mitten and glove is the height of functionality, with a Merino wool and Primaloft blend inner glove and a mitten shell that’s made of Goat leather, laminated soft twill, and two-ply DWR suede to resist water and provide excellent wind protection.

The inner gloves give photographers touch screen finger and thumb access while the 100% merino wool lining keep their fingers toasty warm.

As you’d expect, the Skadi Zipper Mitt has the magnetic FlipTech finger caps as well.

Add in a non-slip grip on the palm, a jersey cuff for supreme comfort, a wrist strap for security, and a handy SD card pocket, and you have the makings of an expedition-worthy glove for the deep winter!

Excire

One of the biggest problems I have (and many other photographers, too) with Lightroom is that it's just so laborious to manually tag my photos.

So, rather than tagging any of them, I just upload them to my Lightroom library. Needless to say, it's a huge mess.

Not anymore, though...

With Excire, you can give the gift of beautifully organized and searchable images thanks to artificial intelligence.

Here's how it works...

Excire Search and Excire Search Pro are plugins that can be added to Lightroom that use AI to tag photos automatically.

With Excire Search, there's 125 common keywords available, so every shot your loved one has of boats or mountains or dogs will be organized and easily identified.

It'll even tag images for the predominant color in the shot as well as tag images based on the people in them.

For example, a photo of an older woman will be tagged "woman" and "elderly."

Excire Search Pro takes things up a notch with over 500 common keywords that can be used for searching and organizing photos.

Better still, Excire Search Pro has a keyword transfer function, so it can be used to search images already in Lightroom.

That means the photographer on your list won't have to hunt around in their thousands of images for the one photo they want.

On top of all that, Excire is an award-winning plugin and they have a 30-day free trial available. What's not to like about that?!

That's because this camera strap was purpose-built for single camera shooters.

The big, contoured shoulder strap makes this a comfortable strap to wear, even for hours on end.

The integrated stabilizer strap helps keep the shoulder pad in place to enhance comfort and security.

With 2019 rapidly approaching, now is a great time to evaluate your photography kit, identify the things that need to be replaced or added, and set about taking your photography game to the next level.

If you're like me, though, you have a long, long list of things you want to buy but not enough money to do so.

With a limited budget, what should you replace in your photography kit?

Here's a few top ideas...

Must-Have Photography Accessories: Get a Better Camera Strap

If you're still rocking the camera strap that came with your camera, a better camera strap should be your top priority for upgrading in the new year.

I have a Nikon D850, and you'd think that spending all that money on that camera would mean it would come with a really good camera strap. You'd be wrong, though, because like all factory camera straps, the one that came with my D850 was crap.

Fortunately, there are tons of options for upgrading your camera strap to something that's more comfortable and more functional.

For several months now, I've been using a HiiGuy camera strap on my D850, and it has made a world of difference in my comfort level.

What I appreciate about this strap is that it's highly adjustable, so I can really extend the strap to accommodate my bigger body, and then when my wife has my camera, she can cinch it up and carry the camera in total comfort as well.

This strap has a big shoulder pad as well, so the weight of my camera is more evenly distributed over a larger surface area.

Not only does that help keep shoulder fatigue at bay, but the silicone coating on the underside of the pad also helps keep the strap in place on my shoulder.

The shoulder pad even has a zippered pocket that's perfect for stashing an extra battery or memory cards!

The strap is incredibly strong, too.

It's made of high-end materials so that you get a strap that's not just comfortable, but is durable and can hold a bunch of weight.

That's thanks in large part to the upgraded metal fittings that give you a strong, secure connection between your camera and the strap.

Even better, despite all these fancy features, the HiiGuy camera strap is less than $30.00. That's a steal if you ask me!

Seriously...I was skeptical when I first bought this strap given its low price point.

But I have been pleasantly surprised at how functional, comfortable, and durable this thing is. If you need a new strap, this is one of the best camera straps out there!

Upgrade Your Lens With a Quality Circular Polarizer

I shoot a lot of landscapes, which means I use a circular polarizer a lot.

What's great about polarizing filters is that they're so versatile and can improve so many different aspects of your photos.

On the one hand, polarizing filters reduce atmospheric haze, so distant elements - like the mountains in the background of the photo above - appear cleaner and crisper.

On the other hand, these filters boost the contrast in the sky, so the blue atmosphere has a more saturated tone while any clouds appear brighter and whiter.

Additionally, circular polarizing filters reduce glare off of non-metallic surfaces, that way you can take photos that actually allow you to see into the water instead of featuring a blinding glare off the water's surface.

For me, that's an important element because I shoot a lot of scenes at the beach, so minimizing glare off the ocean is a necessity.

Truly - if you shoot a lot of landscapes and don't have a polarizing filter, you need one for the new year!

There's plenty of filters out there you can try, but if you want a solid combination of performance and price, it's hard to go wrong with a Kenko polarizer.

Kenko filters are the top-selling filters in Japan for a reason - they are meticulously crafted using assai precision optical glass that gives you clear, sharp results.

What's more, these filters are stain-resistant and oil-resistant, so smudges from your fingers will have a much more difficult time sticking to the lens glass.

Better still, Kenko makes these filters with an ultra-low profile housing so they can be used with wide-angle lenses without fear of vignetting. They come in a wide range of sizes, too, from 37mm up to 82mm.

Kenko has really thought of it all with these filters, and with a low price, they're a great (and inexpensive!) addition to your kit.

2019 is the Year to Upgrade Your Camera Bag

Another must-have photography accessory you should strongly consider getting in 2019 is a better camera bag.

Like your camera strap, a good camera bag is essential for maximizing comfort and functionality.

Continuing with the theme of products that I use and love, I highly recommend adding a Holdfast Fundy Streetwise bag to your kit in the coming year.

What's so great about this bag is the incredible functionality it provides you.

It has dedicated interior pockets to keep your camera and lenses separate from one another to prevent damage. The padded interior helps in that regard as well.

The interior divider is removable too, so you can totally customize the interior space for your specific needs.

Additionally, you can add extra pouches to the bag to carry a spare lens or two and add a water bottle pouch to stay hydrated.

The exterior of the bag is crafted of leather and waxed canvas, so not only does it look like a million bucks, but it's also water-resistant.

The stitching on the bag is incredible as well, and shows a commitment to craftsmanship that's indicative of a bag that will last you a good, long while.

I've had a million different bags over the years, and most of them have been just okay. Not this one though...

If you want a bag that's durable, functional, and versatile, look no further than this bad boy!

Along with a better camera strap and a great circular polarizing filter, an upgraded bag will get you started on the right foot in 2019.
