3 Reasons Why Your Camera Strap is No Good

james bold 291257 unsplash

photo by James Bold via UnSplash

For years I carried my cameras around using the strap that came with them.

And if you’re like me, you know that using the factory camera strap isn’t exactly the most comfortable experience…

Yet, many photographers keep using those flimsy, uncomfortable straps instead of upgrading their strap to something that’s more functional.

If you’re one such photographer, do yourself a favor and consider these reasons why your camera strap is no good - and why a new camera strap is in order.

Factory Camera Straps are Uncomfortable

As I just mentioned, the strap that came with your camera is a flimsy, uncomfortable, thin piece of material.

Very seldom do they have much - if any - padding, so they just cut into your shoulder the longer you shoot (or the heavier the gear).

I don’t know about you, but it’s hard for me to stay motivated to keep shooting when I have a shooting pain in my shoulder from the camera strap.

best aftermarket camera straps

Aftermarket straps like the Hyperion Camera Strap shown above solve this problem.

In this case, the thick, yet soft cordage that’s used for the strap helps distribute the weight of your gear over a larger area on your shoulder. And thanks to the round shape of the strap, there’s no hard edges to dig into your muscles.I’ve used this strap multiple times, and I have to say that it’s surprisingly comfortable, even when I carry my Nikon D850 with a big zoom lens.Learn More:

Sure, factory straps are adjustable...to a point. But they try to be all things to all people, and that’s just impossible to do given the incredible diversity of photographers.

What’s more, it’s not like you can customize how a factory camera strap looks, either.

When you unbox your camera, you know that the strap will be black with the camera manufacturer’s name emblazoned on it.

Not only are these things ugly, but nothing says “Hey, I have an expensive camera you can steal” like carrying it around with “Canon” or “Sony” or “Nikon” in large print on the strap.

hyperion 2 best aftermarket camera straps

Instead, opting for one of the best aftermarket camera straps gives you much more control over customization.

For example, if you’re tall like me, you can custom order a longer camera strap to ensure that the camera hangs on your body exactly where you want it.

And opting for a third-party camera strap also means that you can get something that fits your personality.

hyperion

When I ordered my Hyperion Camera Strap, I got to choose the color of the strap itself as well as the color of the binding.

They have hundreds of color combinations, too, so it’s not like you can’t find the exact look you want! And when you carry your camera with a strap like this, you aren’t a walking advertisement for your camera, either. That means improved safety for you and your gear because you’ll be more discreet. What’s not to like about that?!

Factory Camera Straps Aren’t Versatile

hyperion 4

Lastly, factory camera straps are pretty much a one-trick pony - they’re a shoulder strap and that’s it.

And given how uncomfortable they are, not having any options for carrying your camera in another manner means your shoulders will tire sooner rather than later.Again, an aftermarket strap can help you avoid this fate.My Hyperion strap, for example, is 53 inches long, so it’s ideal as a shoulder strap. But I can also wear it as a sling strap or even as a wrist strap if I so desire. Any of these options is possible (and comfortable!) thanks to the manner in which the strap is constructed.

 best photography gear

The point is that having a strap that’s comfortable, customizable, and versatile will only help you in your endeavor to capture gorgeous photos.

After all, the more comfortable you are, the longer you can shoot!

If you’re ready to upgrade your shooting experience, see what you can find in an aftermarket strap. You’ll be glad you did because a better strap is among the best photography gear you can buy.

Hyperion Camera Strap Review - A Quality Upgrade Without a Huge Price Tag

budget camera strap review

A few weeks ago, I put together my top 10 list of the best camera straps of 2018.

That list included a wide variety of camera straps, from very expensive full grain leather straps to budget-friendly options that might not have a ton of bells and whistles, but still get the job done.

In that article, I quickly reviewed a new camera strap I recently purchased from Hyperion Camera Straps.

Now that I've had a couple more weeks to work with this strap, I wanted to do a more in-depth follow-up review. Here's what I learned...

A Budget-Friendly Camera Strap

budget friendly camera strap

Though you can easily spend a couple hundred dollars on a camera strap, not everyone has the budget to do so.

Instead, there's definitely a market for high-quality straps that won't break the bank, and Hyperion certainly makes a strap that fits the bill.

In fact, many Hyperion straps are less than $20, so you get the benefit of having an upgraded camera strap without feeling like you've drained your bank account to get one.

Even their premium leather straps - like the Cinnamon Braided Leather Strap shown above - are well under $30, so no matter which model you choose, you're getting a budget-friendly camera strap.

Handmade Quality With a Story

inexpensive camera strap

Aside from excellent prices, something else that caught my eye about Hyperion camera straps is their unique construction.

Made of thick, round cordage, these straps evoke thoughts of climbing ropes. And just like climbers trust their lives to the quality of the ropes they use, you can bet that you can trust a Hyperion camera strap to keep your camera safe.

Better yet, Hyperion makes each and every strap to your specifications. That means that you get the exact strap that fits your needs, whether it's purple or black, cord or leather or one of any of the other hundreds of available combinations!

corded camera strap

An interesting factoid about these straps is that they began as a labor of love.

Initially, company founder Pavlos Koutsoukos started making these straps as a personal DIY project for his own cameras.

Then, friend after friend approached him to make a strap for them, and the rest is history.

Now Hyperion sells straps to photographers all over the world. What a great story!

A Great Combination of Functionality, Durability, and Aesthetics

camera strap review

This is definitely not your typical camera strap, and I'll admit that I had some reservations when I ordered it. I just wasn't sure how I'd like the corded material and how it would feel under long-term use.

After using this strap on a recent trip to Boston and New York, my concerns were unnecessary.

The cordage is incredibly durable and strong, which is nice to know when you're carrying around an expensive camera!

It's functional, too. I can wear it around my neck or across my body. Hyperion also makes wrist straps if that's more up your alley.

unique camera strap

These straps look really, really good, too!

I know that how a camera strap looks has little or nothing to do with its usefulness, but still, it's easy on the eyes.

And like I mentioned above, you can choose from hundreds of combinations of colors, that way you get a truly custom-made strap that looks just how you want.

That level of customization is definitely not something all camera strap companies offer, especially at this price point.

Is This a Hit or a Miss?

As far as I'm concerned, Hyperion Camera Straps has hit it out of the park.

Usually, when buying a budget-friendly camera strap, there's some sort of compromise somewhere - in the quality, the durability or the comfort.

But in this case, Hyperion manages to meet all of those needs while keeping the strap a very friendly price.

Like I said earlier, I had some reservations about how this strap would feel after shooting for several hours, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was as comfortable as it is good-looking.

If you're in the market for an upgraded camera strap, I can't give a better recommendation than Hyperion!

Improve the Quality of Your Photos With These Simple Tips and Tricks

When it comes down to it, whether you're a brand new beginner photographer or a seasoned veteran, we're all just trying to take better photos.

Sure, the tips and tricks you need as a beginner are different from those that someone with a few years of experience might need, but the process is still the same.

You've got to learn new ways of taking better photos, practice those procedures, and give the necessary time and effort to see positive results.

With these quick and simple tips, you can get started on the path to taking photos that not only look better, but are more meaningful as well.

Don't Be Afraid of Color

photography tips ljubaphotoImage Credit: ljubaphoto via iStock

One thing I've noticed about some beginner photographers' work is that there isn't much in the way of color.

I don't mean they're monotone images, either. Instead, I mean that there's sometimes an aversion to bright, saturated colors, and that's a shame!

Color theory is an important part of photography. Color can help you convey all sorts of moods and emotions, and in so doing, you can create an image that has more visual appeal.

portrait of handsome afro man using his mobile picture id890698790Image Credit: santypan via iStock

Take the image above as a prime example of this concept.

Yellow is often associated with warmth, cheerfulness, and happiness, and as a result, the use of so much yellow in the shot makes it a warm, cheery, and happy photo.

You can definitely overdo it with color and get too crazy with saturation, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't utilize color - and lots of it - and experiment with what works for your photos.

Enable Yourself to Shoot Longer and More Often

hyperion1a

Getting better at photography is all about dedicating time to actually taking photos.

That means that you need to make a concerted effort to shoot photos each and every day.

From a scheduling standpoint, that can be difficult sometimes with work and family obligations. But even if you shoot five photos a day, that's experience that will pay off in the long run!

In addition to making time in your schedule to go out and shoot, you also need to have the right gear that enables you to shoot for longer periods of time.

For me, one of the most important items a photographer has that allows for more shooting more often is a great camera strap.

Why? Comfort!

hyperion 1

The straps that come with cameras leave a lot to be desired on the comfort front - they're flimsy and have zero padding, so they cut into your shoulder and neck, which makes for a very uncomfortable carrying experience.

But with an upgraded camera strap, you can say goodbye to those issues and carry your gear in total comfort.

I've been using a Hyperion Camera Strap the last couple of months, and I have to say that it's surprisingly comfortable.

hyperion 2

The thick cordage from which it's made is both soft and strong while also helping keep neck and shoulder fatigue at bay.

Think about it - the more comfortable you are, the more you'll want to shoot, right?! This strap will do that for you...

hyperion 3

In addition to being comfortable, these straps also look like a million bucks (without paying a huge price tag, either).

You can customize the look of your strap with dozens of color combinations that fit your personal style.

In fact, these straps are handmade to your specifications, so you can truly get a custom camera strap that offers you comfort, security for your camera, and looks awesome, all at the same time.

hyperion 4

And with wrist straps, short shoulder straps, and long shoulder straps available, there's something for every kind of photographer.

What's not to like about that?!

If you're ready to step up your photography game, get a better camera strap to help you achieve your goals.

Photograph Simple Subjects

anna avdeevaImage Credit: anna avdeeva via iStock

When you're just starting out in photography, you don't need spectacular subjects to photograph.

In fact, learning photography by taking photos of things in your house, your backyard, and your neighborhood will suit you just fine.

Take a photo of apples in a bowl, of your dog as he plays with a toy, or of your kids running around in the yard.

Look for interesting light, shadows, colors, textures, and so forth and try to highlight those things in your images.

SolStockImage Credit: SolStock via iStock

The beauty of staying close to home and photographing everyday things is that you can spend more time actually taking photos than seeking out the "perfect" scene to photograph.

What's more, the skills you need to make mundane subjects look great are the same ones you need for any subject to look great - composition, lighting, framing, camera settings, and so forth can be practiced just as well by photographing your kid in your living room as they can photographing a breathtaking mountain scene.

The point is that building your photography skills is all about time and opportunity, and photographing simple objects around your home is a great way to maximize both of those things!

Must-Have Tips for Travel Photography in 2019

tips for travel photographyPhoto by Persnickety Prints on Unsplash

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to spend more time traveling and taking photos, now is the time to start planning your adventures!

But traveling with a camera in tow can present some problems, not the least of which is protecting your expensive gear as you galavant all over the globe.

With these must-have travel photography tips, you’ll learn how to keep your gear safe while also being easy to access. The result? More photos, and better photos, too!

Travel Photography Tip: Don’t Bring ALL Your Gear

travel photography tipPhoto by Roberto Nickson on Unsplash

If you’re like me, when you pack, you think of all the things you might need. It’s easy to lose focus on what you’ll actually use, and instead end up with a camera bag that weighs 50 pounds.

Instead, be purposeful about the gear you take. Do you really need your full-size tripod or will a simple tabletop tripod do? Do you really need your full frame DSLR or will your bridge camera get the job done?

diverse personal equipment for photographer picture id953061410Photo by Milkos via iStock

It might be easiest to arrange all the gear you think you’ll need on a table and then cut the fat from there. Realize that though your favorite lens might be your 50mm f/1.4, your 24-70mm f/4 might be more usable as you travel from one destination to the next.

Once you’ve culled your collection of gear, pack your camera bag and try it on. If it feels weighty or uncomfortable, find more gear to leave behind. It’s better to be comfortable and make do with less gear than have everything but the kitchen sink and be bogged down with a giant (and heavy) camera bag.

Invest in a Better Camera Strap

hyperion camera strap 2

One of the best investments you can make to ensure the safety of your camera and your comfort is a better camera strap.

Let’s face it - it’s not hard to do better than the flimsy, uncomfortable strap that came with your camera. But at the same time, you don’t want a strap that will be “just fine.”

Instead, you want a camera strap that offers comfort, durability, functionality, and looks good all at the same time.

hyperion camera strap 1

I recently ordered a Hyperion camera strap, and I have to say that it ticks all the boxes of what a camera strap should be.

The thick cordage that’s used for the strap feels good on the shoulder, and since it’s so thick, it helps distribute the weight of your camera over a larger surface. It’s durable too - it’s not unlike the rope that rock climber’s use - so you can rest assured that no matter where your travels take you, your camera strap will stand up to use, abuse, and the elements.

hyperion camera strap 3

These camera straps are incredibly functional as well. You can get them in various lengths to accommodate short, medium, or tall statures, that way you can carry your camera in the precise spot on your body that’s most comfortable for you.

Perhaps the best feature of these camera straps is the price. There’s a huge selection of straps for less than $20, which is a phenomenal price considering you get to pick the color combinations of the strap for a totally custom look.

No one ever said you can’t get a comfortable, durable camera strap that also looks good. Hyperion camera straps certainly proves that point!

Get a detailed look at these straps in my hands-on review in the video above.

Think Hard About the Camera Bag You Use

photography tips for 2019Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash

Like your camera strap, you want your camera bag to be comfortable to carry on your travels. At the same time, you want something that will protect your gear, offers good functionality, and blends in so that you don’t become the target of thieves that want to relieve you of your expensive gear.

For some travelers, a sling bag or shoulder bag is the optimal choice as they afford you easy access to your gear without having to remove the bag. Of course, the downside to these bags is that they only have one strap, which can cause your shoulder to fatigue.

best camera strapsPhoto by Thom Holmes on Unsplash

Another option would be a backpack-style bag. The dual straps help transfer the weight to your body more efficiently, which can provide a much more comfortable carrying experience. Of course, access is a little more difficult than a sling or shoulder bag, though many camera bag manufacturers have implemented side-access or back-access zippers for easier gear retrieval.

Whatever type of bag you decide to get, take it for a test-drive first. Load it up and walk around the block a few times to see if there’s any pressure points, if the strap is adjustable enough, and if your gear fits well.

The bottom line is if you have any doubts at all about the bag, send it back and try another one! Your camera bag is the first line of defense in protecting your gear while you travel, so you definitely want to take your time and do the proper research so you get the right bag for you.

Photography Tips for Beginners

Learning photography can be a little overwhelming at times because there's just so much to learn.

Think about it - you have to master exposure, become adept at composition and framing, and learn how to use your photography gear as well.

But as much as there is to learn, the great thing about photography is that there's a wealth of information out there to help you find your way, master photography concepts, and become a better photographer.

With that in mind, here's a quick collection of photography tips for beginner photographers that I found helpful when I was just starting out.

Beginner Photography Tip #1: Always Have a Camera

You can't take good photos - or any photos, for that matter - if you don't have a camera with you!

One of the best ways to get better at photography is to take pictures often.

So, have your camera - even if it's your smartphone - with you at all times. You never know when an opportunity to take a few photos will present itself!

Bonus Tip: If you're having trouble finding things to photograph, think about the things you like. Whether it's flowers or your dog, your kids or trees, photographing things that bring you joy is a great way to motivate yourself to take more photos, more often.

Beginner Photography Tip #2: Learn How to Control Exposure

When you're just starting out in photography, the chances are that you shoot in full auto mode, and that's perfectly fine.

In fact, learning photography in full auto mode can be advantageous at first.

However, learning how to control exposure yourself by manipulating aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, will vastly improve the results you get.

You don't have to start shooting in manual mode to learn how to control exposure, either.

Instead, learn how to use aperture priority and shutter priority modes as an introduction to controlling exposure.

Beginner Photography Tip #3: Get Geared Up

There's an old saying in photography that the best camera is the one that's with you.

In other words, you don't need to spend tons of money on a high-end camera to take great photos.

But what you do need to do is focus on gearing up with photography accessories that make it easier and more comfortable to go out and shoot.

young photographer walking on desert road with tripod on his shoulder picture id696578902Image Credit: bobakphoto via iStock

High on your list of priorities should be a good camera bag and a solid tripod.

A good camera bag should be comfortable when you're carrying all your gear, and functional as well, that way you can get what you need when you need it so you don't miss any shots.

A solid tripod is a must-have as well because they give your camera a stable base for getting the sharpest photos.

And tripods aren't just for certain photographers, either. No matter if you shoot portraits, landscapes, or something in between, get a tripod so you can get the sharpest images possible.

hyperion camera straps 3

Something that beginner photographers often neglect is getting a good camera strap.

Sure, your camera likely came with a strap when you bought it, but the factory strap is, in a word, terrible.

They're flimsy. They're uncomfortable. They're easy for thieves to cut and take off with your gear, too.

But you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a high-quality camera strap.

Take Hyperion Camera Straps as an ideal example...

hyperion camera straps

These straps are handmade to your specifications, so you get a strap that fits your personality while also getting a strap that's highly functional.

Whether you want a wrist strap, a short neck strap, or a longer strap that you can wear across your body, these straps will fit the bill.

Hyperion straps are made of thick cordage, too, so they offer much-improved safety over factory straps.

hyperion camera straps 2

These unique straps look like a million bucks as well - no one ever said you can't look good while you're taking photos!

And perhaps best of all, these straps are budget-friendly, with many of them coming in at well under $20.

That's the key to buying gear - find good quality products that don't break the bank, and you'll soon have a well-equipped kit with money to spare.

Bonus Tip: If you're in the market for a new camera, consider buying a pre-owned camera instead. You can find high-quality used gear for far less money, which frees up cash to invest in better lenses, tripods, camera straps, and other needed accessories!

Beginner Photography Tip #4: Learn From Your Mistakes

photography tipsImage Credit: edfuentesg via iStock

Photography can be a frustrating exercise because there are so many factors involved in creating a photo.

But it's important as a beginner to look at the mistakes you make not as errors but opportunities to learn.

If your photos are dark, figure out why and learn how to fix the issue.

If your photos are blurry, do a little research on what causes blurry photos, and, again, learn how to fix the issue.

There's no shortage of photography tutorials, YouTube videos, guidelines, articles, and so forth on all manner of photography topics, so if something isn't right in your images, you can find the answer to fix it.

Of course, saying "don't get frustrated" is easy. But if you stick with it, continue to learn and practice, and seek out ways to build your photography skills, in time, you'll find that you're a much better photographer than you thought you could ever be!

Easy Photography Tip #1: Fill the Frame

Quick and Easy Photography Tip 1

A common problem in photos taken by new photographers is that the subject isn’t strong. Without a commanding presence in the picture, it can be a bit on the boring side, leaving viewers wondering what the subject of the photo might be.

You can resolve all those problems by filling the frame with the subject.

Use your lens’s zoom (or simply walk closer to the subject if you don’t have a zoom lens) and frame the shot such that the subject is the most prominent thing in the photo.

Easy Photography Tip #2: Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

Quick and Easy Photography Tip 2

When you watch people take photos, you’ll often see them close the eye that isn’t looking through the viewfinder. You might even do this yourself.

If you do, keep that other eye open. It has a couple of advantages.

First, by having both eyes open, you can see through the viewfinder and also see what’s happening out of frame. This is especially important when you’re photographing scenes that change, like a sporting event or a wildlife shot.

photography tricks for beginners

Secondly, if you’re shooting portraits, keeping the off-camera eye open allows you to connect with the subject because they can see the whites of your eye. That’s advantageous because it can help the subject relax in front of the camera, and the more relaxed they are, the better the portrait will be.

Easy Photography Tip #3: Gear Up With a Better Camera Strap

hyperion 1

I know what you’re thinking…

How can a different camera strap improve your photos?

Think of it this way - the strap that came with your camera is totally uncomfortable, right? It cuts into your shoulder and causes your neck, shoulders, and upper back to ache. The more you hurt, the less likely you are to keep shooting, let alone enjoy it.

And since practice makes perfect in photography, being comfortable while you take photos will enable you to shoot more often and take more photos, thereby becoming a better photographer.

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to get a better camera strap, either.

hyperion 2

In fact, I field tested a Hyperion camera strap - which set me back less than $20 - and it totally rocked.

The unique construction of the strap, which uses acrylic cloth cordage, was both attractive looking and comfortable to wear.

hyperion 3

The cordage is nice and thick, so it helped distribute the weight of my Nikon D850 over a larger area.

I also liked the fact that if I didn’t want to carry the camera over my shoulder that I could use it as a sling strap or wrap it around my wrist.

hyperion 4

The point here is that straps like these look great, are incredibly versatile, and comfortable to boot, so it’s really the best of all worlds, especially at this price point!

Tips for Aspiring Street Photographers

tips for street photographyImage Credit: Tomas Hliva via iStock

If you ask me, street photography is one of the most intimidating types of photography, given the fact that you're photographing perfect strangers on the street.

It takes a lot of gumption to be able to do that (and a lot of practice as well), but the rewards can be fantastic.

In this quick-start guide, I offer up a few tips I've learned about becoming a better street photographer.

A Smile Goes a Long Way

taking pictures of everything on vacation picture id497154557Image Credit: PeopleImages via iStock

Whether you're cruising main street in your hometown or you're in a foreign country on the other side of the world, put a smile on your face as you walk around, and you'll be surprised how much that does to quell any fears people have about you taking their photo.

Not only does it make you more friendly and approachable, but it also helps others to see that you aren't doing something nefarious.

Besides, if you smile, people will often smile back, and that makes for a great street portrait!

If your smile is met with distrust, don't just keep shooting. Ask politely if you can take the person's picture, and if they want nothing of it, move on.

But in my experience, nine out of 10 times, a simple smile will get you "in the door" to take a photo.

Street Photography Tips: Tell a Story

young man crossing a city street picture id864505578Image Credit: Pyrosky via iStock

Taking compelling photos on the street requires that you find a way to tell a story about the person you're photographing - a person you have mere seconds to capture and who you'll likely never see again, by the way.

It's a tall task, but if you can master it, you'll have much better photos on your hands.

The trick to telling a story is setting the stage for the story and allowing people to enter the scene you've set.

That means that you need to determine things like the mood you want for the shot, the setting, and the background to create the vibe you want.

Then, it's just a matter of waiting it out, and allowing people to become part of the story.

This approach is contradictory to what many street photographers do, which is to wander the streets and take photos as they go.

But setting up shop in one spot and having the people come to you can get you even better results. It requires a lot of patience though!

You Need Small, Lightweight Gear for Street Photography

hyperion

Aside from the fact that street photography involves many hours walking around, thus necessitating a small, lightweight kit, it also requires you to be highly mobile and have the ability to move around in streets that could be incredibly crowded.

That means carrying a huge full frame DSLR with a 70-200mm lens is probably not the best choice.

Of course, gear is often a personal preference, so do what works for you.

But for me personally, I prefer a small mirrorless body like my Sony a6300 and a 35mm lens.

hyperion shoulder strap

You also need to take care when selecting the camera strap you use.

Obviously you want something that provides the safety and security needed to protect your camera and lens, but you also don't want something that's cumbersome and difficult to work with.

I recently discovered a camera strap by Hyperion that fits the bill for street photography perfectly.

street photography tips

The thick cordage used to make the strap is incredibly durable and strong. It honestly feels like I could throw it over a tree branch and pull myself up with it (though I haven't tried that...).

It's surprisingly comfortable, too.

Initially, I was concerned that the rounded cord would dig into my shoulder, but that's just not the case. I can carry my camera for hours and hours exploring the city without feeling any sort of shoulder fatigue.

street photography techniques

I opted for the long shoulder strap version of the Hyperion strap, but they also make short shoulder straps as well as hand straps (like the one shown above) if that's more your style.

Speaking of style, Hyperion custom makes your strap to your specifications, so you can choose the colors you want and get a strap that fits your photography vibe.

They even have leather strap options if you want something with an extra touch of class.

These straps look really, really good, too. In fact, I've had people on the street approach me to ask where I got my strap!

Best of all, Hyperion understands that not everyone can afford an expensive camera strap, which is why their straps are all under $30. Talk about a deal!

There's a few other things you can do to get better street photography results:

  • Get in close. The closer you get, the more emotion you get in the shot, and the more invested viewers will be in the image.
  • Find interesting angles. Not every street photo needs to be from a traditional eye level, nor should they all be traditional compositions, as shown above.
  • Be respectful. Photographing a lover's quarrel or a downtrodden person on the street isn't always advised.
  • Practice a lotLike any kind of photography, street photography requires that you simply get out there and do it!

With the tips outlined earlier and the quick overview of street photography techniques above, you should be in a better position to have a successful street photography outing!

I don't think anyone will argue with the sentiment that the camera straps that come with cameras are not good.

In fact, I'd say that most factory camera straps are downright terrible.

They aren't comfortable. They certainly aren't good-looking. And they're easy for would-be thieves to cut and take off with your prized gear.

With all that in mind, making an investment in an aftermarket camera strap makes perfect sense.

The question is, which camera strap is right for you?

Here's our list of the top 10 camera straps of 2018 to help you make a decision.

Leather Camera Straps

There's nothing quite like the comfort and durability of leather. These camera straps capitalize on that to deliver the utmost in camera carrying experiences.

Holdfast MoneyMaker

What landed the Holdfast MoneyMaker at the top of our leather camera strap list is twofold: quality and features.

To say that this thing is built well is the understatement of the century...

The first time I laid hands on a Holdfast MoneyMaker, I was completely speechless - it's that impressive.

But it's not just about looks for the MoneyMaker.

The leather construction means this thing is durable and comfortable.

My MoneyMaker has molded to my body over time, so it's even more comfortable years later than it was when I got it!

What's more, the bridle leather of my particular MoneyMaker has withstood all sorts of photography adventures, and it still looks like a million bucks.

Of course, with this harness system, you can carry two cameras with lenses attached, and with an additional camera leash, you can carry a third camera with lens attached.

On top of that, you can also carry a number of Holdfast's camera bags with the MoneyMaker, so it becomes a complete camera carrying system.

In other words, this is the ideal camera strap for photographers that need to have tons of gear on their person (i.e., wedding photographers).

By having two or three cameras at your fingertips, you can minimize lens changes and maximize the time you spend actually taking photos!

Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo

D810 180701 0070 1024x1024

There was just one problem with the original Holdfast MoneyMaker - it was designed for carrying multiple cameras.

Not all of us need that capability, which is why the Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo is a great choice for shooters that want a luxury strap but typically don't shoot with multiple cameras.

Just like its big brother, the Holdfast MoneyMaker Solo was designed with both form and function in mind.

Using the same leathers and hardware, the Solo looks every bit as swanky as the original, but in a smaller package.

The key to the Solo's success is the stabilizer strap that wraps around your side to keep the Solo in place on your shoulder.

Combined with the big, soft, contoured shoulder strap, you have a system that offers both incredible comfort while carrying your gear and supreme functionality.

The Solo stays put on your shoulder, right where you want it to be, and your camera stays put at your side, out of the way yet right at your fingertips when you need it.

The Holdfast Belt Anchor makes that possible because it locks your camera to your belt. Then, to use it, simply pull the release tab and bring your camera to your eye to take a shot.

Better still, you can use the Solo to carry additional gear, just like you can with the original MoneyMaker.

Carry a Holdfast Cell Phone Pouch or add a Holdfast Lens pouch to increase the versatility of this beautiful and functional camera strap!

HiiGuy Camera Strap

What's great about the HiiGuy camera strap is that you get a whole lot of bang for your buck.

That is, where other budget-friendly camera straps might be flimsy or poorly made, neither of those things are true of this well-built strap.

HiiGuy went through the trouble of investing in better-quality materials, that way they could provide you with a great strap that will be durable over the years but that's still budget-friendly.

Consider as well that this highly-adjustable strap is perfect for just about any photographer, whether you're short or tall or whether you shoot with a big DSLR or a small mirrorless camera.

The large shoulder pad has tons of padding to help distribute the weight of your gear over a larger area, thereby making it possible for you to go out and shoot for longer periods of time with less fatigue.

And since the strap's mount plate is also padded, you can rest assured that your HiiGuy camera strap won't scratch or damage your camera.

This thing even comes with a three-year warranty and a host of other goodies like a SD/Micro SD Case, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and an eBook of photography tips!

BlackRapid Curve Breathe

blackrapid

Not only is the BlackRapid Curve Breathe camera strap a great budget-friendly buy, but it's also one of the most comfortable straps on the market today.

As you can see above, the large shoulder pad increases the area of your body that bears the weight of your gear. And since that surface area is so large, you can shoot longer and in greater comfort.

The shoulder pad also has moisture-wicking properties, that way you're less likely to get all sweaty when you're working hard to get the shot.

Beyond that, the Stabilizing Strap that comes with this camera strap helps ensure that your camera stays put on your shoulder, right where you want it.

This strap is designed to be worn across a right-handed shooter's body, so it drapes toward the right hip where the camera rests.

When carrying a camera with this strap, the camera rests upside down, that way there's less of a chance that you accidentally bang your lens against something as you walk.

Add in brass and zinc alloy hardware, and you have a winning combination for a budget-friendly strap!

Additionally, the Slide Lite has a silicone-coated grip that keeps the strap securely in place when using it as a shoulder strap.

Speaking of the anchor connectors, they're smaller and faster than on other Peak Design rigs, so you get high performance while also enjoying a leaner, meaner strap!

What's more, Op/Tech's "Uni loop" connectors make it a breeze to connect the strap to your camera.

They feel strong and secure, and require you to squeeze on both sides to get them to release, so you don't have to worry about theft or inadvertent releases.

The contoured shoulder pad offers tons of surface area for distributing weight, and its non-skid surface keeps the strap solidly in place on your shoulder.

It's not a bad combination of features, to say the least!
