The new Canon mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS M200, is the only camera you should be looking at if you’re looking to upgrade from your iPhone or Android.
Cheap Canon mirrorless cameras are few and far between, which is why this one is so exciting.
It functions better than any smartphone’s camera on the market today and isn’t much bigger than those smartphones either. So, let’s take an in-depth look at the Canon EOS M200.
Canon EOS M200 vs. M100 Comparison
Most media refers to the Canon EOS M200 as a “modest” update to Canon’s original M100.
While this may be true in terms of the body of the Canon EOS M200, the upgrades to camera functionality are anything but modest.
In terms of the differences in the bodies: the Canon EOS M200 is a tiny bit lighter (just 3-4 grams) than the M100.
The Canon M200 also comes with a built-in flash and a 180-degree flipping screen for those selfies.
The Canon EOS M200 also includes a faux-leather grip, which I think looks classier than the plastic body of the M100.
The Canon EOS M200 also features a diamond texture on the lens barrel that makes it much easier to refine the focus as needed.
It seems the Canon EOS M200 is finally jumping on the all-white labeling bandwagon as well. Whereas the Canon EOS M100 featured some green and red buttons, the M200 upgraded to something a bit more aesthetically pleasing.
Canon EOS M200 Performance
In terms of small mirrorless cameras currently on the market, the Canon EOS M200 blows everything else out of the water.
The M200 comes with a Digic 8 processor - Canon’s latest powerhouse chip - and while the pixel count between the two versions haven’t changed, this new processor allows the camera to take 4K video.
Where the previous version of this Canon mirrorless camera had a measly 49 autofocus points, the Canon M200 comes with a whopping 123 AF points
And on top of the better AF, the Canon M200 also includes better metering for low light shooting. For still shots, the Canon M100 could only meter down to 1EV, whereas the Canon M200 can meter to -1EV for stills.
Metering also works better for video. The new version can meter to 0EV for videos.
I love me some eye-detection autofocus and this Canon M200 finally features it.
Finally, the auto white balance mode now includes two choices: ambient-priority or white-priority.
That’s not a bad set of features to enhance your ability to get better shots!
Canon EOS M200 Introduces New RAW Formats
If you haven’t heard of C-Raw images, allow me to explain.
C-Raw images are a compressed raw format that saves an incredible amount of space and improves buffer depths, all while maintaining an almost perfect photo quality.
The Canon M200 got an upgrade in its C-Raw image format. Where the Canon M100 was working with .CR2 raws, the Canon M200 is working with .CR3 raws.
All this means is that you can save more and more images on the memory card, just like a smartphone, without having to transfer files as often.
Canon EOS M200 Shoots 4K
We’ve got in-camera WiFi with the Canon M200 that can be controlled from your smartphone, which is fun. This way, you can post all of your photos and videos online just as easily as you could have from your iPhone.
This camera also comes with a Type-D Micro HDMI connector, plus a Micro-B connector for connecting to a computer.
Canon EOS M200 Pricing
The Canon EOS M200 is set to drop on Halloween and it’s incredibly cheap at $500.
As I already discussed, it also far surpasses the cameras on the newest iPhone or Androids.
