Tips for Creating Wall Art for Your Home

I think by this point of the pandemic, we are all going a little stir crazy. I know I’ve been looking for any sort of home improvement projects to pass the time.
One project I’ve been working on is creating wall art for my home, but as someone with a definite lack of interior design skills, it has been pretty rough.
I’ve been scrolling through social media looking for ideas for wall art, tips for creating wall art and basically inspiration.
And I figured I may as well share what I’ve discovered because I’ve actually found a lot of solace during this time in creating wall art.
Speaking of wall art...
In the video above, I put seven canvas printing companies to the test. I ordered the same print from each one, and compare them in a head-to-head battle to see which company is best in 2020. Check it out!
Choose the Correct Photos

While choosing any photo you love to hang on your wall is a surefire way to make sure you’ll love it, I like to think of choosing photos for creating wall art as a balance between two things.
You want the photo to be both beautiful and sentimental. Obviously, not everyone that comes into your home is going to understand the sentiment of a photo on your wall, so it doesn’t make sense to hang a hideous 3-foot photo up just for you.

But, in the same way, beautiful photos without any meaning behind them won’t give you the sense of satisfaction you should get after creating wall art for yourself.
Overall, make sure you choose a photo with a little bit of ‘wow’ factor.
Make Sure Your Image is High Quality

This one should go without saying. If you take an image with a low resolution and get it blown up as the major piece to hang in your living room, it’s going to be pixelated.
When creating wall art, make sure your photo was either taken as a JPEG or a RAW. JPEGs are good if you aren’t looking to edit your photo at all; RAW images are good if you are planning to edit them before compressing them down into a JPEG.

I also find people are worried to reach out to their printing lab about questions like image quality. If you choose a professional printing lab, they would love to answer questions about which of your photos would work best as wall art.
Match the Photo to Your Home

I’m guilty of not following this tip because I find ideas for wall art that I love so much I do them anyways, and it never turns out as well as if I had specifically worked with my home.
If you have a whimsical home, like the home above, make sure to choose a photo that is bright and full of color.

If you have a more modern home, on the other hand, think about choosing something more subtle, like a black and white photo.
Pro tip: While looking for ideas for wall art, make sure you’re thinking of any home renovations scheduled for the near future.

Measure, Measure, Measure

I’m a big fan of canvas prints...
Yet, I can’t tell you how many canvas printing tips I’ve read that forget to mention this step!
Do not just order a canvas print and hope for the best. Have a specific place in your home in mind where you want to hang the print and ensure a canvas print of the size you want will fit well there.
This is likely the easiest step of the whole process, but an important one nonetheless.
Choose Your Canvas Maker Wisely

While you can create wall art on your own, it’s much more difficult than if you have a great printer already in mind.
While the Walmart photo center is cheap, it is cheap for a reason and that reason is all of their photos are crap.
Instead, I recommend a high-quality printer. I’ve worked with CanvasHQ for years. They answer every question I have throughout the printing process. They stop my projects when they realize I’ve accidentally sent the incorrect folder.
But, most importantly, they only use the highest quality ingredients. You can’t have incredible wall art without ink that refuses to fade. CanvasHQ’s ink lasts up to 6 decades without fading at all. You can’t have incredible wall art without a canvas that is hand-stretched and a canvas frame that is hand-built.
The difference between CanvasHQ and other canvas printers is that the people who work at CanvasHQ are genuinely excited to help you create the wall art of your dreams.
Plus, if they don’t create the canvas of your dreams, they offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. You can return it if you aren’t totally satisfied.
The pandemic hasn’t stopped the canvas printing business. CanvasHQ’s current production turnaround time is just 2 days and to convince you to use them for the first time, they’re running a 30% discount with promo code “Honey.” What’s not to like about that?!
