Tips for Creating Wall Art for Your Home

I think by this point of the pandemic, we are all going a little stir crazy. I know I’ve been looking for any sort of home improvement projects to pass the time.
One project I’ve been working on is creating wall art for my home, but as someone with a definite lack of interior design skills, it has been pretty rough.

Choose the Correct Photos

While choosing any photo you love to hang on your wall is a surefire way to make sure you’ll love it, I like to think of choosing photos for creating wall art as a balance between two things.
You want the photo to be both beautiful and sentimental. Obviously, not everyone that comes into your home is going to understand the sentiment of a photo on your wall, so it doesn’t make sense to hang a hideous 3-foot photo up just for you.

But, in the same way, beautiful photos without any meaning behind them won’t give you the sense of satisfaction you should get after creating wall art for yourself.
Overall, make sure you choose a photo with a little bit of ‘wow’ factor.
Make Sure Your Image is High Quality

This one should go without saying. If you take an image with a low resolution and get it blown up as the major piece to hang in your living room, it’s going to be pixelated.
When creating wall art, make sure your photo was either taken as a JPEG or a RAW. JPEGs are good if you aren’t looking to edit your photo at all; RAW images are good if you are planning to edit them before compressing them down into a JPEG.

I also find people are worried to reach out to their printing lab about questions like image quality. If you choose a professional printing lab, they would love to answer questions about which of your photos would work best as wall art.
Match the Photo to Your Home

I’m guilty of not following this tip because I find ideas for wall art that I love so much I do them anyways, and it never turns out as well as if I had specifically worked with my home.
If you have a whimsical home, like the home above, make sure to choose a photo that is bright and full of color.

If you have a more modern home, on the other hand, think about choosing something more subtle, like a black and white photo.
Pro tip: While looking for ideas for wall art, make sure you’re thinking of any home renovations scheduled for the near future.

I’m a big fan of canvas prints...
