Filter or not?

Hi, I'm a big fan of B&W photography and I was wondering if there are differences between real filters and camera built-in filters for black and white... What I read so far is that using built in filters would give me more freedom for adjustments in the post processing, but do I need that "freedom" if using a filter actually gives me the result that I want? Thanks for advices and experience!

If you're shooting digital, I would always shoot in full-color and convert to black-and-white later. (Software) This gives you the ability to apply a variety of filters later… Giving you a better result.  If you're using film, I've never used (and not seen...but I think I heard of) in camera filters, so I cannot be certain, but I would imagine the quality of "real" filters can be greater. This might be the better image quality.

My DSLR does not have any built-in filters either.  I doubt very much that any built-in set can match the variety of lens filters that are available.  And neither type can close to the tone control that is available for a RAW image in post, even though RAW always starts with a full color image.

A physical filter on the lens will have its full effect on either type of image, JPG or RAW.  Which may appear to give just the look you want at that time, but why lock that choice in forever?  Applying a digital filter to a full color image later in post gives you a 2nd chance to evaluate the image.  And fine-tune the result.

If you simply want to preview the filter effect at the time the shot is being taken, set the image type to RAW (or RAW+JPG) and the picture control/style to monochrome.  Any digital (built-in) filter will show the filter effect on the camera's LCD (and the JPG version of the image) while the RAW image will still be in full color.  But a lens filter will make the choice irreversible for both RAW and JPG.
