1DsIII ISO test 400-1600iso

I have the opportunity to buy a used (but well looked after) 1DsIII.

This camera is known as a landscape/studio camera (to be used at low ISO) so people say it has bad higher ISO performance.  The highest native ISO it goes to is 1600iso.  So I won't be shooting above that.  Anyway, I have it on trial at the moment and I took some shots to compare high ISO last night (excuse the shake in the lower ISO shots, they were taken hand held at pretty low shutter speeds without any IS).

Firstly the overall shot (this one happens to be at 1600iso) so you can see what it looks like overall.

Now 100% crops (remember this is about noise and not sharpness...)  I added some NR and sharpening on them in LR (you can see the amount) as I don't believe in testing without reasonable PP.
All shots taken with a Sigma 35 1.4 at 1.4 (for the speed) they would be sharper if stopped down and I didn't shake so much ;)  Another point.  The 400iso shot seems a little bit more exposed than the other two.  That's just my fault.  Still you can get an idea.

So.... I'm planning to shoot this at a max of 1600iso with a Sigma 35 1.4 at events.  Coupled with the 70-200 on the 1Dx.

sure, post some ISO samples with the same NR added in Lightroom. ;)

It reminds me of a 5Dii. It doesn't have the blotchy grain of a crop camera (I owned the 40D).

Ouch!  Guilty as charged, blotchy can be a problem :S

Yeh blotchy grain is one of the reasons I liked my 5D more than the 40D. I assume the 50D isn't that much different.

Anyway, I was surprised on how usable 1600iso is on the 1DsIII. I always imaged it would be a giant mess considering how everyone says this is a strict Studio/Landscape camera.

Yep. It's the real world results that count.
