Why did Nikon release the D4s before the D400?

Hasn't the D400 been in line longer than the D4s?  You would think there is a larger market for the D400, which would make a good reason to launch sooner.  Right?  I just seems backwards if you ask me.

No idea why but it does look like the D400 will be out very soon, except it will likely be called the D9300   The rumour mills are buzzing, see here .  As of very recently the D300S is no longer listed on official Nikon sites.

Its still entirely possible the D300s is the last of a line. Maybe the crop cameras will be phased out, or the so-called flagship camera is the D7100. It could also be the tsunami and/or Thailand floods set Nikon back more than they're letting on? I'll be honest, I miss my old D300, (The D7000/D7100 was NO replacement) and would like to see a 24mp version with high frame rate and clean low light capabilities, but it may not be in the cards.
Patience is a virtue.......;)

Why so serious?

I think one of the reasons is that they had to decide whether they want to go on with "Pro APS-C " cameras or not. The affordability of full frame cameras must have made the decision tougher I guess.

The moment I saw the word Flagship for the D7000 for the DX, I knew that a Pro sized body for DX was gone. You will have to live with DX mode in the D800, and up to get that same body. Well actually to the D800, and its offspring, because the D4 is a larger body. And actually since Nikon is increasing its pixel count, the hit you take with IQ in DX mode now is not that great. The problem with the D700 in DX mode was that the D700 had the same pixel count as the D300, so the DX mode images sucked.
