Rate to charge magazine for photo

Hey guys, I have been contacted from a magazine who wants to use one of my photos from my last Hawaii trip.  I have not called them up, but want to get my ducks in a row.  Should I charge for the photo, or just be thrilled that I get published and name recognition in the magazine?  If I do charge, how much should I charge?

I have never been published before, let alone contacted by anyone like this.  I'm excited, but don't want to screw this up.  Any advice you can give would be appreciated!

Well first off I want to know how large of a magazine this is, and is it an actual print magazine, or is it an online one? If it one that is distributed nationally in print, then they should have a submission section that states what they pay for photos that they buy, but were not looking for. Since they are requesting your photo you should charge slightly more. Arizona Highways tells you what they pay if they accept your photos for publication, I think it is like around the $500 range, with an accompanying description, or article. So first I would see what they pay for reader submissions first.

Isn't the magazine going to be making money from using your photo?? Then you charge usage...

Look at sites of pro photographers organizations like ASMP to determine how much to charge etc. Also check Terms & Conditions of any website before you post photos, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to also find out who owns a website, where it's located, if it's a registered business, etc. In a print magazine there should be publisher's info. usually on a table of contents or similar page.

And read the terms of any contract you're given to sign and make sure usage is specific.
