Heading up to Alaska in November looking for some tips

9 years 7 months ago #402370 by Tony Imaging
November 1 through November 12 we will be up in Anchorage.  Well technically the outskirts of it.  We are visiting my wife's brother.  I'd like to make the most of this trip with my camera.  Any must see spots to photograph up there?

That whole state for the most part is a target rich environment. Depending on how much wind the sun is putting out, there will be the aurora, so bring support, and extra batteries to keep warm in your pockets.

Very cold up there in November. I've driven it a number of time's and that is the way to go, beautiful trip either way; Al-Can or Kassier. I liked the spring as the best time to go up, lots of bear cubs out, young moose and caribou and woodland buffalo. Fox's, wolves ect. Not much light for shooting in the winter. Built house's up there a couple years. In the winter we'd go to work and turn on light's outside and run them all day. Daylight then amount's to a hour or so of dusk every day. Go in the fall and still a good number of hours of light and the moose and caribou have their antler's back. Driving up either way you'll go around Kluane lake, pronounced Klu-wane-ee, beautiful. Last time I went up was in May and they'd put in a viewing station on the south side, sheep mountain. Sheep all over the mountain behind the place with telescopes put out. You could spend a life time photographing Alaska without getting into the interior.

Talk about a fun trip, you don't have step far from the city limits to find amazing shots up there.  However as mentioned, this time of the year, it's going to be cold up there.  I also be prepared for short days.

OMG up there, all you need to do is take your camera out and point it at the horizon.  I have a friend who spends nearly 6 months every year up there.  He's not even a photographer and yet always comes back with amazing shots.

Northern lights might be tough in November, there is usually heavy cloud coverage during that time.

Not sure about the clouds, but tons of other things to photograph there.
