Any operation that has to do with hair in Photoshop is scary for most amateurs, usually because of the finesse it requires. That's why a lot of them don't even touch it and they risk losing good photos that could just use a little tweaking around the hair lines. Or maybe they could be made even more interesting by changing the hair color on the model. And that's exactly what we're going to dig into now.

Changing the color of the hair will change the entire photo dramatically. It will basically transform the person completely and that can be one of the most effective ways to achieve something that would otherwise be impossible. Let's face it, your brother or your friend is probably not going to dye their hair blue just because you want to take some photos.

With that said, it's actually a lot easier than it sounds. It's true that a lot of what makes it easier wasn't available six or seven years ago, but the tools in Photoshop CC really help a lot. Even selecting the hair is a snap thanks to tools like edge refinement, but it's a good idea to remember there are other tools you can use to get the job done. Whichever one you find it easier to work with is probably the best for you.

If you already know what color you're going for, it should make things faster. However, I recommend trying out a few variations. You never really know how it looks until you see it and you might be in for a few surprises. Whatever you do, make sure you stay on the good taste side and stay away from anything cheap looking or kitschy. It's very easy to get carried away and ruin the entire shot.
