Older Canon 5d Mk III more vibrant colors than Canon EOS R

I was just noticing that when taking a photo with my older 5D Mark III DSLR and then taking the same photo with my EOS R, the colors seem more vibrant with the 5D.  How is that even possible, my 5D is so old compared to the EOS R.

Hi Fran ,

1 thought , do you have either camera set at non-default settings in <Picture Style> menu [ in the 3rd list of the "Shooting" menu ] ? , such as :
  • the "Landscape" or "Portrait" or "Neutral" styles as opposed to the "Standard" [ default ] style ; 
  • or  perhaps the "Saturation" or "Contrast" or "Color Tone" control in any of the styles ?   Non-default would be if the upper pointer arrow is set to the left or right of the central "0" position .
Each  < Picture Style > option / setting  imparts slightly different colour saturation (related to vibrance) , or contrast , color tone  characteristics to the others .

For both cameras to give you  same or even similar characteristics ,  they should be set at same < picture style > settings , and exposure control settings (such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed )  .  Even a difference in exposure can give impression of more or less vibrance .  To extent ,  lighter exposures can be slightly more 'vibrant' than darker exposures .

Yeah I can see this as annoying.  Here are my 2 cents on what could be happening here:
  • Color Science: Different camera models use unique color processing algorithms. Canon's 5D Mark III and EOS R might render colors differently due to variations in their color science, which affects how vibrant the colors appear straight out of the camera.
  • Sensor Technology: The sensors in these cameras not only differ in resolution but also in how they interpret light, which can impact color vibrancy and accuracy.
  • Image Processing: Each camera has its own image processing system. The EOS R, being newer, might handle dynamic range or contrast differently, which can subtly change how colors look.
  • Settings Variations: Ensure that both cameras are using similar settings (like white balance, picture style/profiles) as these greatly influence the color output in your photos.
It's always a good mix of subjective preference and technical differences that define a camera's output. Sometimes, older cameras like the 5D Mark III are preferred for their 'look' straight out of the camera, which might seem warmer and more vibrant to some users. If you prefer one camera's color output over the other, you might consider customizing picture profiles or adjusting settings to match that look across your devices.

When the last candle has been blown out
and the last glass of champagne has been drunk
