The Content of Shadows

4 years 4 months ago #673126 by Tom-Dinning
I’ve never had a mentor, teacher, Google, forum or YouTube to teach me about photography.
I went to a class when I bought a digital camera. I think I annoyed the instructor.
The plan has been to take pictures of anything and learn from that.

Some of those “anything”s stuck with me. Maybe they taught me something I could use. In most cases the result is purely visual. Sometimes they stimulate me to write.

Its hard to explain. David Adams once said it’s not possible to teach someone how to take a photograph: you just have to do it.

Im inclined to agree

Shadows can be seen as an issue to be dealt with, something to penetrate, to find the detail.
They can be avoided or included. Without them the image will often lose depth, interest, intrigue.
The contrast they provide enables us to see the image as a whole, a part of an entire space. Shadows separate light from light. Shadows can be used to hide or expose, partly hide or partly expose. Shadows help to define outlines and contoured.
Shadows are the BLACK when there is WHITE.
Shadows are all the grey scales from 1 to 255.
without shadows we would live in a much fatter and less interesting world.
